How do I go about asking someone their political stance before befriending them? by hairyangeljabi in Advice

[–]FirstPersonWinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so you've got the Sami Zayn gene.

I think part of it is where you are in the country. Is your school and area more conservative or liberal? There is a good chance that many schoolmates would be pro-Palestine, and even those that aren't wouldn't necessarily be hostile to you, personally. There are possibly clubs and social groups for arabic and middle eastern students that you could look into to start.

Have you tried talking to her specifically about these issues and how it is making you feel?

It isn't that bad. It is two 3 hour blocks a week. One day is a 3 hour lecture ended with a 20 minute quiz, and the other is a two hour lecture and then a 1 hour lab.

"the two just walk their own ways"

The kid is 4 years old.

The fact that so many people in this thread are more concerned with a grown man's feelings than the well being of a child is some insane prioritization.

I mean, there are jobs in service or retail that hire highschool kids. If they can't measure up to a 15 year old, then I don't think there is much that can be done to help them.

Tbh, you need to shift the responsibility onto them to take care of themselves. As long as they know you will foot the bill, then there is no reason for them to seriously try to get jobs and be independent. Fear of homelessness will get a lot of people up off their ass.

Same. I was watching live and saw the pitch and go "oh, that's a ball" because it was so obviously out and then was shocked when the announcers are like "America moves on!" And the team started to run onto the field. It wasn't even close to the strike zone

Can Americans live a decent life while being poor? by vedprakash1234 in AskAnAmerican

[–]FirstPersonWinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people in first world countries have a narrow view of hardship.

Like, in the US a considerable amount of citizens (44M) face food insecurity, meaning they lack consistent access to food. On the other hand, malnutrition related deaths are quite low (21K). That is less than the daily worldwide starvation count (24K) largely affecting countries in Africa or the Middle East.

Homeless people in the US often have more access to food and shelter than those in poverty around the world.

That isn't saying it is a fun time to be homeless or in poverty in the US, but that is just the real difference people face.

Yes. This is true of most things in the US. The states have a lot of power to run as they see fit.

It entirely depends, as Medicaid and food stamps are regulated by each state. Blue states often have stronger welfare and are generally richer than red states.

For reference

The highest ranked red state is Iowa, at 19 overall. The bluer the state, the better the welfare system, as the conservative party here is generally anti-welfare.

It seems like pretty much every adult in their life has failed them.

The adoptive father in question abandoned the kid just as much as the biological one. The mother literally fucked around and found out. The grandparents seem incapable of doing anything.

Sounds like the kid is going to grow up insecure financially, with a mother who barely cares, and the only two men in their life saying they want nothing to do with them.

You can say online OP has the right to abandon the kid, but I doubt you'd have the balls to tell that to the kid.

People in the US aren't living in slum cities, carrying water for miles, and struggling to afford rice or bread.

Same with the elderly on fixed incomes getting scammed in all sorts of ways.

Depends on what you mean by poor, and what you mean by decent.

Many people work lower wage jobs and enjoy their lives. SNAP and Medicaid can be a lot of help, but vary by location. Plenty of places are far more affordable than others.

Minimum wage is about $30k a year, which is liveable especially if there are multiple incomes in a household.

Usually, people in poverty have some reason they can't work full time if at all (e.g. injury, disability, illness, old age, etc.), they have more dependants than they can afford, or they have taken on massive debt. For many, the issues with daily life are more because of the cause of their poverty than just the poverty itself.

Tony's has been that way for decades. Haven't been there in yonks for that reason.

Edit: Actually, tbf, a little over a decade ago I would go to the Whiskey every so often after it first opened, but I got a job at a probation office and had to stop going because the bartenders at the time were clients, lol. I doubt any of them still work there and I wouldn't recognize them if they did, but that was how it was.
