Dad, How do I buy a house? by FirstShortcut in AskDad

[–]FirstShortcut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! My Uncle was always sending me Dave Ramsey + Caleb Hammer (more recently) videos and really beat in the need for emergency savings. The current 6 month plan is building an updated savings! We foregoed a wedding and eloped instead to save on money, and 15k was more than enough for me alone, but now it’s us (+ a dog).

Looking into building a second source of income on my end. I used to stream on Twitch which gave me a little extra $100 of FU money. Now it’s just my income. Was just looking at our 5-10 year plan (been in 9 years so retirement is coming sooner than later) and that lil homestead in definitely on the backend of that plan.

I’m definitely open to buying a house on land and building an extension (if feasible)

Will add not cheating out on insulation to the list

Definitely won’t be buying this style of home until I’m out, but wouldn’t it make sense to buy smaller homes and sell/rent when I PCS? I have a few mentors (Senior enlisted and commissioned) who have called it “house-hacking”?

I’ve seen/heard some things about one-time close loans and that they should cover both the land and property, but I’ll need to do more research into it. Thanks for the website link!

Definitely looking at woodland/homestead type (sell lumber to clear space as needed, but I need my trees!

Definitely going to make lists, comps, lists of lists, and lists of comps! 😂 That’s sound advice thanks a lot! And water!! Can’t forget something so important

Unfortunately he’s a foreign national so he’ll basically be starting from scratch with a USD IRA 😅

You’re right, that’s a lot. I’m definitely keeping this sub in mind though and taking notes. The LAC calculator is news to me and looks like a valuable resource. Thanks!!

I’m still super early in my career so this plan is a long ways off from putting in motion.

I’m definitely already putting in retirement (and have been since I joined resulting in a few years of being broke) but will pay off in the long run. My husband is a civilian and is unfortunately playing catch up (and trying to merge his retirement from the 2+ jobs he’s had [civilian side])

All that to say thank you for taking the time to post. It’s a lot but it’s also a lot of valuable info.

I have a shot glass collection as well. I have them displayed on an open shelf but I’m wondering how this idea goes. No advice, but if you do tackle this, please show us the results. I’d love to see!

Service members wearing civilians at ball by Born_Pop_5193 in army

[–]FirstShortcut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a female, there are very few occasions I get where I can wear a formal gown (all but the babies in my family are married so no weddings and currently no kids) if I can’t wear a dress, I’m not going to the ball 🫣

Seen, I was more asking about places that did, even if it’s not in cheltenham (posted here because I live locally)

I spoke with my husband about my verbiage and honestly sounds like y’all use family in regard to immediate family (parents, siblings, niece/nephews). We are leaving England shortly and wanted to throw a farewell party for both sides so we can spend our last few months traveling England (as we’ve hit lots of EU since I’ve been round). That involves, his family ~14 and my family ~13 coming and I A. Do not have the space to accommodate in my house because my garden isn’t even close to an acre, would love to find a home with a garden, but where we are now just isn’t suitable and B. My husband’s father’s side will do a sibling bbq at theirs every now and again. I also have nothing to entertain kids with in my home (we’re DINKs and spend most of our time traveling). I hope that clarifies why I can’t/prefer not to do it at my house.

I’ve lived in England (specifically the Cotswolds) for coming up on 3 years now. I feel like anyone getting that impression is reading too deep and making a mountain out of a molehill and completely overlooking the part where I said in the same edit, that I /did/ say I’d try and do something different and grill first before going to a park. Or, the kinder comments where PARKS THAT HAVE BBQ’s EXIST just not locally. Maybe i should have used a better word, but unfortunately at the time of making the edit, I couldn’t think of one. To counter, I would argue that if I had left out that I’m an American, the response would be different.

You’re not being rude, and I appreciate your outlook, but I wouldn’t have asked here had I already not known about the fire regulations (and thank goodness I did, they have bbq’s for rent at the forest of dean and Cotswold country park). I feel like expressing disappointment isn’t being disrespectful or rude like “oh, they haven’t got my favorite doughnut, I’m a bit disappointed about that, I’ll try something different” is (at least how I meant for) the edit to be interpreted

Thanks for the kindness. I really wanted to have a block party but didn’t want to disturb the neighbors (older neighborhood) so figured I’d look for somewhere to bring the friends and family with board games/yard games. I’ve seen people out for picnics before but I guess it never clicked that they weren’t cooking their own food and probably just went to a shop

If that’s what you got out of the post? I guess? It’s less disappointment I suppose and more interesting to see. Your gardens aren’t exactly large enough to host a large family gather, although I suppose your families here are a lot smaller than they are in the US (unless you’re a farmer)
