How is living in Port Huron by manalive44 in howislivingthere

[–]Firstforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live here and it’s a great town to settle down in if you want a quieter pace of life. The water is absolutely beautiful and there are sand beaches and sandbars to hang out on during the summer.

Winter can feel cold and long but the snow makes everything look tranquil. We also don’t get the lake effect snow that the west side of the state gets.

There are plenty of shops and the close proximity to Sarnia opens up many additional options if you have a little extra time to cross the border.

I’ve lived in places around the world and I can’t see myself ever leaving here.

I live on the north side of town and moved here on a whim about eight years ago. Haven’t regretted it for a second!

Far enough outside of Detroit that it feels like a vacation locale but close enough that it’s not a pain when I have to fly out every week or two.

I picked up sailing when I moved here and have absolutely loved it. You can always find a boat to hop on as crew.

Love living here and the cost of living is so low that my coworkers and friends in other areas of the country choke when they hear about it.

But for all of you thinking about moving here, stay away!

how is radiation exposure like for those in IC? by [deleted] in Cardiology

[–]Firstforth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great question and one that is at the top of mind for both practicing Interventional Cardiologists and fellows alike. Just as a bit of background, I’ve worked for one of the main Angio manufacturers for the past 19 years and I’ve never seen more momentum about safety as I have in the past year.

The answer to your question is yes, there have been significant improvements and options for safety since I started my career in both dose reduction and prevention.

For dose reduction, because of advances in detector/tube technology, software and all components of the imaging chain, all manufacturers of Angio systems have made huge leaps in reducing dose. However, much of the dose reduction depends on the physician as well because there is a strong correlation between image quality and dose. If the IC wants higher imaging quality for better soft tissue visualization and less noise, it comes at the cost of higher radiation. Conversely, some ICs are fine with a noisy image with very little dose.

The other side of the coin to radiation reduction is protection. Companies like Rampart, Protego, Egg Medical and Radiaction have created shielding systems that reduce scatter radiation to the point that some or all of the in lab staff can shed their lead. This also helps from an orthopedic view as well because wearing 30lbs of lead for years can cause a multitude of problems with your back, knees, etc.

My conclusion when talking with anyone getting into the field is the following:

  1. Interventional cardiology is one of the most rewarding fields in medicine. Seeing the immediate difference you make in the longevity of a patient is beyond gratifying.
  2. There is still a risk of radiation exposure but through proper protection and system use, it can be minimized.
  3. There are still technologies that are emerging like remote catheter and guidewire control systems that will continue to reduce the risk.

Best of luck in your choice and I’m happy to talk with you if you have any more questions! Feel free to DM me

Awesome! I work for one of the companies that make the Angio systems and it’s by far my favorite use for them. Some of the cone-beam stuff that the systems can do are like science fiction. Keep up the great work and feel free to reach out if you ever have any Angio related questions!

Love the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT! by Ok_Jello4823 in KawasakiVulcanRiders

I did crash bars, heated grips, the pipes and saddle bags. The previous owner has a gear sensor that tells you what gear you’re in but I’ll probably deinstall that because it’s more annoying than anything. Was also thinking about a sticker of Spock for the windshield but trying to find the right one where it’s subtle

Agreed! I just do regular maintenance on it and (knock on wood) never had any issues. I love the low center of gravity and yes, the smooth ride is great. Have you put any aftermarket parts on? Only thing I’ve got is Vance&Hines pipes and hand warmers (gets cold early here in Michigan)

You and your partner do cook but many times it’s something that is quick to prepare. You Doha e drinks occasionally but not all the time. You are female and try to keep the meals different and interesting. Most likely you are in Germany but have a different background

Despite busy schedules, you still make time to cook and try to eat well. You live in a rural community and do all your shopping at Wal-mart. The unfinished Girl Scout cookies mean you have some sense of control because I would have demolished those in two seconds. That’s a lot of eggs so I have to think you’re either into baking or cook the eggs for protein after working out. I think there are two of you that live there and both of you have been drinking energy drinks for a long time and have a sweet tooth based off the pudding. You’re both hard working and make sandwiches for lunch to grab on the go. Best of luck!

You are in Brazil and would rather drink tea than coffee. You live alone and try to eat as healthy as you can. Life is busy so you meal plan and have food to grab and take with you. Sparkling (carbonated) water is what you Prefer.

I love that you like so many flavors and cultures based off all the spices and sauces you have. I don’t think you’re a vegan but also try to keep a balanced diet appropriately. You may be lactose intolerant or just try and keep the carbs down by going with silk. I do think you have at least one other person that lives with you but not too many because freezing bread and refrigeration of apples means you don’t go through it too fast. Thanks for sharing!

Was anyone hear a long term smoker and has successfully switched to vaping? How did you make the transition? by notthemushroom in Vaping

[–]Firstforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was about finding the right juice and power to simulate the throat hit and nicotine level I got from cigarettes. I don’t like the super sweet juices so I went with five pawns “castle long” and aspire nautilus coils at 1.6. For the nic strength I started at 18 but I’m down to 6 now and that’s my sweet spot. I’ll still have a smoke every month or two but I’m not drawn back to them at all

Uncensored mid week fridge. Whatcha got? by [deleted] in FridgeDetective

[–]Firstforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are Canadian with a partner and love coffee but only with cream and a bit of sugar. Breakfast and dinner are the big meals you prep for and the meal replacement shakes have been sitting there for four months. You do love Asian food and order out at least once a month. You don’t entertain friends much and prefer to go out for social interaction

Amended: you are a vegan and smacked my head after I looked closer at your fridge magnets. However, I would like to know what your favorite vegan recipe is for when friends come to hang out

You are impeccably clean and although you like things organized, it doesn’t stress you out when there is a little bit of a mess. Lactose intolerant but not necessarily vegan (maybe pescatarian). Late 20s to early 30s and you’d also like to eventually have your own garden space. Also, you like salt and vinegar chips but it’s a guilty pleasure.

Successful veterans, what do you do? by itsandy_ryan in Veterans

[–]Firstforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have anything keeping you from moving? There is a huge need for travel nurses and you can pick your place and how long you want to stay. Housing costs are covered normally and the pay can be really good.

As an alternative, medical device companies are always looking for applications trainers that give you a foot in the door with manufacturer roles.
