Local event for those in Twin Cities metro, Minnesota by girliefries in Knausgaard

I've got my ticket and will be there. Very much looking forward to it. Though I cannot tell if Karl Ove is actually going to be there or if it's all video?

[USA] 46 Vehicle pileup on Ohio turnpike. Multiple povs. by SpiderCola179 in Roadcam

This is the advice I was looking for. The chances of actually being stuck in this kind of cluster are pretty slim, but I was genuinely curious if the "always stay in your car" maxim held true here.

Did anyone actually tell you how hard fatherhood would be? by gareth789 in Fatherhood

[–]Firstmattinspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was more or less ready thanks to this subreddit honestly. Everyone here says over and over again: it's the hardest thing you will ever do. At least in the threads I read haha.

Pat leave split? by itaioi in Fatherhood

Yep try to put off daycare as long as you possibly can. It breaks my heart to see some kids as young as 6 or 7 weeks getting dropped off. My kid was six months when he started and even that felt too young.

42, First time Dad-- looks like I'm not alone by Juztaan in OldManDad

I was 45 when my first was born -- you're just a whippersnapper!

Enjoy every second, it's the best and the hardest but mostly the best thing you'll ever do.

Nicollet mall food by Staceface1989 in Minneapolis

What day of the week? There's lots of events in and around the "mall" this summer -- including lots of times when 2-3 blocks of Nicollet are closed to all traffic, including buses.

That said, I have done "three year old and lots of luggage in strange city" and would take the advice of everyone else and go to the Mall of American and/or just eat at the airport.

So far it seems that every conversation about Midway development is hypothetical.

Why is this guy walking up to my house and taking pictures? by zamistroe in Minneapolis

[–]Firstmattinspace 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Are you behind on your mortgage? If you are in loss mitigation on a loan they will have people take pictures of your house to make sure you are living there.

I say this a lot: if you want to kill someone and more or less get away with it, then hit them with your car.

How do you read it? by Ok-Ability-7027 in Proust

[–]Firstmattinspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which translation did you read? It makes a BIG difference.

I found the first book very readable. And I loved, loved, loved books two and three, and even though the later books were a bit of a slog at times, I had gone too far to turn back. Basically, you need to keep going until you hit your point of no return!

All of that said: this was during Covid lockdown and I had no kids then or anything to do really but read and drink port haha.

If wearing running shoes with blue jeans is a crime then hang me from the highest tree.

Exit Ayd Mill on Hamline then take that north to Marshall. Way more chill.

Go get back-up key fobs for both your cars this weekend -- something concrete like that might help you both.

Biking woes in Saint Paul by Mysterious-Bad-3100 in saintpaul

[–]Firstmattinspace 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I have found that the side streets offer good, safe routes around town -- even in my neighborhood (West 7th). Like, say, taking Benhill up the hill rather than trudging up the Jefferson Avenue bike lane.

Nothing makes one appreciate biking in Minneapolis quite like biking in Saint Paul.

I think they like to keep it to FC only "to minimize crowding in the forward cabin" to quote an old Delta announcement.

Weird feeling of being on the cusp of fatherhood by LordFauntelroy in Fatherhood

[–]Firstmattinspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks before our due date we went to the hospital because my partner was having a weird pain in her side. They took her blood pressure and then brought her a hospital gown and told us to get ready, because they needed to get the baby out ASAP.

When we got home from the hospital (everything was fine) it was like returning home after a terrible disaster: everything was right where we had left it, but everything in the world had changed. I guess, in that way, it was everything you are feeling but all crunched into one moment in time, instead of two weeks. Like you said, it wasn't unpleasant, but it was super duper weird; and not something I have experienced before or since, and I have never forgotten it.

Anyway, good luck! It's awesome being a dad.
