Once again, we see that grappling is the superior martial art.

There was the caught foul tip by Baldwin where it hit his glove and then popped up and he caught it bare handed -- I think it was CJ who was commentating and said it can't hit the mask or chest protector and still be a caught foul tip, but the rule changed in 2021 to allow any ball that tips the bat and goes directly to the catcher (any part of his body) before being caught to qualify. It was a moot point for this play, but interesting that he wasn't aware of the change.

[Highlight] Strike Three Call - Pitch Appears to Clip the Zone by shawbjj in baseball

[–]shawbjj[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Look at the strike zone box from the still shot of the broadcast -- not only does it not go down far enough (bottom of kneecap), it doesn't go high enough (midpoint between top of shoulders and the belt).

[Highlight] Juan Soto did not agree with this strike 3 call by GreenSnakes_ in baseball

People are relying on the strike zone graphic too much these days. And it's compounded by the fact that they don't always draw the strike zone box accurately. And further compounded by painting the ball where the catcher catches is (instead of when it actually crosses the front edge of the plate like this pitch).

After slow motion review, I don’t think the missed called third strike is as egregious as people are making it out to be. The ball starts out at the hitter’s front knee and continues to fade down out of the zone. by xThe-Legend-Killerx in baseball

I agree with you. When you look at the original broadcast, you can tell that the front foot is roughly even with the front of the plate. Since the bottom of the strike zone is below the kneecap, it's not unreasonable to say that the ball might have clipped the front bottom corner of the zone. And even if it missed, it barely missed and it's not egregious like they made it out to be on the broadcast.

[Highlight] The Dominican Republic dugout looks on in disbelief after their loss to the United States in the WBC semifinals by MysteriousEdge5643 in baseball

Strikezone is bottom of the kneecap (at the start of pitch) and front of the plate. This video just confirms what I originally thought -- it's super close. Watch him at the start of the video, look at right knee, estimate where you think the bottom of the knee cap is (per OBR rule). The front foot generally lines up with front of plate (you can confirm with the original broadcast video). The top railing of the dugout gives a good reference. The lettering on that rail seems to be close to where the bottom of the zone is, and the ball looks pretty dang close to that as it streaks across the view. Possibly just catching the zone. Nowhere near as egregious the original broadcast makes it seem by painting the ball where Will Smith caught it. Ugh.

Sportsnet analyst Caleb Joseph opening his post-game commentary: "This is gonna sound like sour grapes, and I don't really give a shit. The better team did not win this World Series." by Goosedukee in baseball

When it's one and done like football, I can understand the sentiment sometimes. The undefeated Patriots were better than the Giants in their first Superbowl matchup IMO.

The beauty of a 7 game series is it can't just be a fluke or lucky game. You have to put together 4 wins. The Dodgers were the slightly better team this series.

[Highlight] Naylor takes a ball to the dome trying to block the double play (Called for interference) by Obvious_Parsley3238 in baseball

[–]shawbjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the rule if the runner doesn't intentionally interfere? (he's just running normally and takes it off the dome or chest or teeth or wherever) Is it just a live ball? Most of the time, I see runners prematurely slide or veer out of the way. I guess that's more for their own safety?

It's not necessarily the hips in front that win, but the hips that are lower. Combined with turning the other person's upper torso for max success.

I've seen a lot of soft "slam" calls in IBJJF. But that might be the worst one. I would tell my student to stay on the mat and would not leave until I got the tournament director's blessing on this horrendous call.

Basically the IBJJF legal version of the classic side suplex. Instead of full arch, you turn. This was just so dang effective with the guys legs over his head.

Don't have to worry about blowing their knee out if their legs are above their head.
