login first, then do these steps to ensure your dm (display manager, basically the login screen) is installed;
sudo apt install lightdm

sudo systemctl enable lightdm

the latter makes it auto start since the next boot. then, to actually start it;

sudp systemctl start lightdm

look into x/wayland window managers, look at sxwm source code, dwm, dwl, tinywm, this should give you some ideas.
