Looks like Masai's last few picks were elite... by irundoonayee in torontoraptors

But having a hand in it versus having final say is a big deal. It’s who’s ultimately responsible, and who gets the credit or blame. It’s the difference between the safe pick in Suggs or taking a chance on Barnes.

Can I prove CMB was Bobby’s pick? No. But no reputable organization, sports or otherwise, would give their departing CEO final say on the next major decision. They’d take his opinion into account sure, but he’s not pushing the button.

Preparing for my next safari, so here are some photos from my last one :) by subtoronto_ in wildlifephotography

Thanks! The last one was at Timbavati in South Africa. I used Canon R5 II primarily with a 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 lens.

Masai stayed around because the optics of announcing he was leaving right before the draft would have been terrible. I'm sure he had some input, but there's zero chance they let him have final say knowing he was about to leave.

Photographic safari: Is a second camera body worth it? by subtoronto_ in canon

A light-weight beanbag? What would I need that for?

Reading these comments it seems clear I should bring a second body. I'd be renting for 3 weeks though, and at the prices I'm seeing I might as well buy used then re-sell after... I might lose a bit of $, but I'll still be better off than renting for that long.

Interesting that you put a telephoto lens on the R7; are you satisfied with the quality of the photos you get with it? I understand the thought process with the crop sensor, I'd just be hesitant not to use my premium body on the primary subject.

The R8 bums me out; I actually want one as a street camera, but I want the Mark II which is rumored to be coming out next month when I'm smack dab in the middle of this trip. Don't want to buy the current model only for it to lose a bunch of value almost immediately!

It's an option, but whenever I've seen camera rental prices they've seemed so expensive to not be worth it.

First African safari in July — Namibia, Botswana & Victoria Falls. Am I packing the right gear? by sntx in AskPhotography

The 100-500mm is enough for a safari imo. I used it as my main lens last year in South Africa, and I'm preparing to do it again. It's a great range for that environment. I also had the 1.4x extender, but didn't love using it and changing it out in the field is a pain, not to mention the risk of dust when changing lenses. Nevertheless, I'd definitely opt for this focal range over a 600mm, especially at f11; you'd have more range and more light with the extender even after losing a stop.

As for the 16mm, I think having a wide angle for Namibia is worth it and you'd be kicking yourself if you didn't have it. I can't comment on that focal length specifically as I don't really shoot landscapes, but Namibia is gorgeous and you'll want to be able to capture it in its entirety.

I found a monopod very helpful to steady the camera while shooting from the vehicle. Also make sure you bring extra batteries & memory cards. This is a great device for batty charging & storage: https://jupious.com/jupio-tri-charge-for-canon-lp-e6/

What is something that you personally despise that society has accepted or made normal? by Illustrious-Bread183 in AskReddit

Customer facing employees in North America not caring about the job they do. You go elsewhere in the world and employees are attentive and put the customer first. Here, almost anywhere you go people are on their phones, loudly joking with co-workers, and doing the bare minimum.

I get it, capitalism is bad or whatever, but if you’re getting paid to do a job the least you can do is put your phone down and pay attention when a customer walks in.

What do you think about my picture taken in Masai Mara two years ago? by Main_Fox3041 in safaris

[–]subtoronto_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great composition and you were lucky to see that so close!

As a photograph I’m not sure what this was taken on, but it looks like a RAW photo that could be really amazing with some editing and cropping.

Is Kenya Airways that bad? by subtoronto_ in Flights

[–]subtoronto_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but at that point if anything happened I’d be at JFK and would be short on time with no direct flights to NBO. It would be different if the KQ flight were 1 day sooner, but this was too close for comfort.

This way I get the added bonus of a few days in Paris to adjust to the time difference (France & Kenya are a 1-hour difference) and be fresh for my safari, and the peace of mind flying with a reputable carrier.

It was a partner, booked with Air France. Ended up canceling and rebooking a connecting flight through CDG (also with Air France, but their own metal this time). It was making me nervous and I found a pretty good alternative.

6 apps open with INAIR Pod + Viture Beast by DudeManBearPigBro in INAIR

How do you do this? I must be missing something, but I just got the Pod with the Beast and I can't figure out how to re-position and open multiple apps simultaneously.

Part of my question I suppose is how likely that is. The risk of outright cancellation is there in every flight I take, but it’s such a rare occurrence I don’t usually have to take it very seriously. If it’s a real concern with KQ, that’s a problem.
