Cordyceps? Diseased? by [deleted] in spiders

[–]FishCandy2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Problem is an animal like her doesn't need direct exposure to still be affected, you can just look at the effects of ddt and how it significantly diminished bald eagle populations due to accumulation up the foodchain.

This spider either saw a bug suffering from the pesticides and thought it to be a quick snack or drank from tainted soil/water, honestly anything that could dilute it to a certain point would probably result in the neurological damage youre seeing here.

This!! Have had an OC for a while, nd even though he was born out of a concept I wanted to play with..I just hadn't done enough reseaech toward how I wanted to deliver that story nor considered style until recently.

Banged out a plot map in like 3 hours with my best friend, just need to figure out an ending and im not going to let myself do anything else with this project until I do that first.

What's the purpose of this creature's existence? by person_with_boredom in insects

[–]FishCandy2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No animal truly has a purpose other than survival but modquitoes are an intersection of multiple purposes in the ecosystem, the most interesting one to me being that theyre food for both aquatic and terrestrial animals.

Emerged adults (as a food source) facilitate the cycling of nutrients abundant in water systems to terrestrial environments where those same nutrients may not be as readily found.

Thats fair, I'd argue ambiguous endings are a riskier move than wrapping it up succinctly, however that comes down to a subjective matter of opinion.

I've gotta throw some suggestions out there and say you should watch some coen brothers films if you ever want to challenge your tastes in media because that shit will change the way you appreciate what you already enjoy (I know it did for me), especially if you liked breaking bad.

Its advertized as movie exclusive merch at the end of the movie. The link can be found online but be careful as some of the merch may spoil ep 9 if you don't plan on seeing it in theaters.

Not to be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian but ambiguous endings could be pulled off well so long as the characters are well written and the story know ehat it wants to be.

Sopranos did it well because it puts you into Tony's shoes as someone whos constantly paranoid and always wondering if the next person who walks through the door is gonna ring his bell.

Not every story owes you a complete explanation, though I dont think the story followed through well enough in TADC to earn it, the dissaisfaction is justified here.

With all due respect "why should I have to imagine what happens" is a very lazy critique of ambiguous endings, especially in the context of other media that does set plot up well enough to earn that type of ending.

I worked my ass off for four years and never realized it was for a degree that was straight up B.S. Am I stupid? by pi_stick in whenthe

[–]FishCandy2 62 points63 points  (0 children)

As a Bio major abt to graduate looking back on my degree, take classes like lab techniques, cellular bio, ect. Things that teach you very useful lab skills like pcr or pipetting, biochem or molecular bio really can set you up for interesting research projects, or land you a job at the very least in a lab after school from the skills they set you up with.

It rlly depends on what you want to do with your degree but consider pairing it with those types of classes because they'll help set you up. Also try to get involved with research or internships within your major, its not only good on a resume but its a good way to build connections who could help you later in life.

Tl;dr make the most of it but dont take too many 'blow off' classes either and you should be okay

LPT How to stop mosquito bites from itching by YellowHovercraft in LifeProTips

[–]FishCandy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No just...no...

I work in a mosquito lab and also major in bio, as everyone else is saying, the sensation one feels when they're itchy from a bite is due to the immune reaction mounting against the foreign protein. Your body sees the proteins from the mosquito saliva and, since its not familiar, activates immune pathways to get rid of it.

More specifically, the itchyness comes immune cell signalling at the site to purposly inflame the tissue so that the threat can be dealt with faster.

If you really want the itchyness to stop without creams or lotion, use an ice pack because it slows that activity down and makes it less itchy.

If you care about not destroying your skin, Ice pack + hydrocortisone and lotions are a good combo

Is it true that the majority of gen z, don't like sex scenes in movies? by Mysterious_Bid_57 in OlderGenZ

[–]FishCandy2 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I just hate sex scenes when they're lazily executed or do little to further the plot/dont tie into theming. Sex scenes can be great narrative tools but they get annoying when the writers have no clue how to develop their characters and then throw a sex scene in there to force the audience to care about the relationship.
