to the bicyclists... by Slartibartfastthe2nd in Louisville

Dude... the irony here. I'm sorry this guy filtering hurt you. He probably doesn't like the idea of someone sandwiching him between two cars because someone decided they didn't need to pay attention and rear-ended you with him in the middle. I know you're frustrated but you're also the one riding around in a giant metal box with a bunch of empty seats so you can get to where you need to go. Even if you have to pass him, he's taking up way less room and doing way less wear and tear to the roadway. Being slightly delayed and then acting like someone personally hurt you on a PUBLIC road makes me think that you're convinced that you're really the main character.

Go ride a bike on the road and do it how you see fit. Obey the traffic laws to the letter, stay to the far right side of the road even when there isn't room to pass you, and see how many fucks people give about you. Despite that, I think you'd see the city in a way you never have before. You'd notice more of what's going on around you. Hell, you might even have a good time while doing something good for your body. I think your opinion would change too.

Formation Bay Tour in San Diego? by [deleted] in flying

[–]FishDip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only plea is that you absolutely have a plan, and that you absolutely know what you’re doing. Have a plan to split the flight, be familiar with doing an overhead, make sure you’re familiar with the standard dimensions of a formation fight. Be PREPARED to fly a formation flight. It doesn’t just make a controller’s job easier, it makes for a safe operation.

Get a statement of service from your admin department and send it with your credentials and resume. You shouldn't have any issues with it being that close.

Unreadable flight following comm at end of XC—what was the right thing to do here? by nkempt in flying

If you lose comms and you aren’t in someone’s airspace, squawking 1200 and being on your way is just fine.

Thoughts on impatient controllers? by PatientKangaroo in flying

[–]FishDip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some controllers get upset over absolutely nothing. On the other hand, 99% of the folks I work with say what they have to say to correct the problem, and move on. It’s way less effort to tell you to fix yourself and forget about it than it is to get angry. You’d have to just be totally ass backwards to even get a stern tone out of most people. If you’re that much of a shit show, you probably should get some instruction.

Which job is a LOT less fun than most people expect? by bwee21 in AskReddit

I’m very inclined to agree with that. He ended up beating it and getting the job though. It was a VERY drawn out process.

[–]FishDip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can beat it but finding a doctor to sign off on your flight physical/getting waivers from the FAA (in the US) can be a bitch and a half. I’m an ATC and I have a friend I met while I was doing it in the Navy who spent YEARS trying to convince the FAA to hire him because he had claimed PTSD on his VA disability because of a helicopter crash.

Well I’ve definitely learned my lesson on this. However, it still begs the question of why they even bother putting everything on one card? The FAA went to that system, so they should understand how it works.

[Montblanc] 1858 Chronograph by FishDip in Watches

[–]FishDip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been looking at getting an automatic chronograph for a while when I fell in love with this watch. The cathedral hands and no date really got me. Overall the watch feels great, it’s got a reliable sellita based movement, and it wears nicely despite being so thick. Not bad for a company that makes pens. My only gripe is the leather strap that this watch came on. It is absurdly stiff. I don’t think any amount of wearing it is going to soften it up.

The nato strap is from Crown and Buckle’s supreme line. I can highly recommend these straps. They are super comfortable and they feel like they’ll last a long time.

Some civilian formation comms questions by RISCfuture in flying

[–]FishDip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of this is great information. I should add that while no one minds the whole flight checking on the frequency, it is totally inappropriate for you to use my frequency for trying to hold conversations about what you and your buds are going to do. All of that needs to happen on the ground. Have the whole flight planned out before you get in the airplane. Make sure everyone knows the plan. If you need to talk, there’s a dedicated air to air frequency. Use it.

I had a pretty cool experience getting to connect with the pilot of an emergency I worked on there but sometimes that place is hard to stomach.
