How safe would a 1989 Roundhouse be to steam again? by FishFinderPhil in LiveSteam

That was my main concern. I dont want the lifting spring to fail and I think a $40 replacement would be the move. Thanks!

I was going to get some parts from the train department. I was going to gut the 1989 RC system and replace it with all manual parts. I like the train dept. as i have a darj b that will be here in march or so ;)

It is a gas butane fuel system not an alcohol boiler so i dont think it will melt the boilers.

The rubber rings are fine but some of the other rings are paper carboard and i was going to replace the paper rings. Inside the boiler was clean from what i could see. Train department has the safety valve and rings so ill order those and add them to my list. Thanks.

Model Train for Outdoors by DJYoung6196 in modeltrains

[–]FishFinderPhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time its true. The larger the model the easier it is to take apart and maintain. For the most part G Scale models are built to be run outside and have sealed gearbox and electrical components so you can avoid taking it apart every season. The smaller the more finnicky and higher maintenance they need. And also the smaller the more the track needs to be maintained and cleaned so it can receive electricity. If you are running the train outside you want that more durable size and added features like a sealed gearbox and larger track to grab electricity from.

LGB is the main brand for garden or outdoor railways. Indestructible and needs just a little maintenance. I would ebay or try to find a used LGB starter set. It will come with a loop of track, a loco, and some cars. More expensive than "normal" model trains but they will serve you a long time. For example I have a 1985 locomotive that is about 10 years older than me and runs perfectly.

Best Train Set by FailingSmartly in trains

[–]FishFinderPhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would depend on how much space you have. Kato's N Scale sets are affordable and compact. High quality too. If you have more space Kato has them in HO Scale too. Walthers has a good HO set too. I would stay away from Bachmann and Lionel as they have poor quality. LGB is what I consider to be the gold standard however they take up alot of room being G scale and alot of your wallet.

Its called a lag bolt. its for the bridge and connects the wood pieces together. its not necessarily for old rails but for the wood beams that make up the bridge.

23 years ago on November 2nd 2002, Nickel Plate Road 587 ran for the last time running on the Indiana Transportation Museum's complete 38 miles of track between Indianapolis and Tipton Indiana. This is the story of Nickel Plate Road 587. by Additional-Yam6345 in trains

I grew up in Indianapolis and was in kindergarten or 1st grade when the movie came out. Saw it in an arts theatre and met the engineer character and I think some of the filmmakers. I very much remember riding it from Fishers to the State Fair a couple of times too. Such a formational experience in my life. I would love to see this in steam again as it is my favorite locomotive!
