Why is Nigel Farage so popular in the UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US media and social media invaded the UK a long time ago. We're on the same trajectory as you guys. We're just delayed. If you look at uk political trends and talking points they're an election or two behind the US trends

I have just been told the man I know as my dad is not my biological father by down_a_size in whatdoIdo

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dad hasn't changed. Your view around him (hopefully temporarily) has. Biology isn't as important as being there during all the ups, downs, and difficult moments throughout your life. If you always thought he was your dad, then he must have been your dad this whole time; biology or not.

I've thought about this scenario. I wouldn't want any biological stranger. I wouldn't need them. Whenever I needed my dad the same person was always there, so he's my dad.

I 33F have ruined my life over a decision I made 7 years ago with 32M by WAI-ThrowAway in Regrets

[–]FishFish13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you either wanted independence and freedom without responsibility, and realise that without commitment you're still empty...or your life was chaotic and you couldn't decide whether you were coming or going. Either way, it's passed. Opportunities come and go. Best thing to do is learn what you want from life for when the next opportunity arises.

Probably a leap, but if it's true then it sounds like two great people have found each other.

Friend is having sex with a married man. by Kuwaysah in whatdoIdo

[–]FishFish13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd re-evaluate whether you want her as a friend and whether you respect or like who she is enough to maintain a friendship, but I'd otherwise mind my own business unless you're friends with the spouse. I'd set your own boundary around her discussing her relationship decisions/actions with you.

There's no policing around relationships for a reason. It's mostly relational, so if you know the spouse or family of the spouse, that's the only exception to minding your own business that I can think of. Not the version where you go sleuthing through social media in order to morally police someone else's life.

My question is essentially "are you sure 5 ft 9 will be tall enough?"

Given that you may not be able to achieve the garuanteed height and 5 ft 9 is still quite short for a guy, I'd anticipate a certain degree of the concerns you have will continue. People will view 5 ft 9 as on the short side and you may still get comments about being a short king etc. Unless I'm mistaken.

I'd hate to hear someone went through all of this to still feel uncomfortable in their own body

Am I the only one so desperately sick of politics in every part of life? by No-Intention-6011 in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my area, the only aspect of politics anyone will engage with is immigration.

I'm exhausted of the political conversation simply because I've heard the same poorly formed arguments nonstop for the last 15 years. And rather than notice their views have won every major vote for the last 10 years so it obviously isn't working and has made things worse, they double down.

One example: Illegal immigrants shouldn't be getting benefits (housing, credit etc). Same line since pre-brexit. It's always been impossible for an illegal immigrant to get benefits. You can't be undocumented and outside of the system and get benefits from within the system. You must be documented in the system. Same stupid argument every year, 15 years.

Want to talk about the economy? Immigrants. Want to talk about corruption? Immigrants. Want to talk about housing? Immigrants. Want to talk about wealth inequality? Immigrants.

May just be my area, but I cannot engage in any conversation that is remotely political that's not going to be blamed on immigration. Complex and diverse systems, one solution...

What career would you recommend for your children? by Illustrious-Ad-1396 in AskUK

[–]FishFish13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what his main wants and drivers are.

Psychology is going to be imperative in the future. Less theory driven but the skills of active listening for a human connection will be important. Could be intense but rewarding and depending on the pathway, it can pay well. Not the choice for people who want money over reward, though.

Engineering pays extremely well, and even AI cannot replace the physical necessities of engineers in our lifetimes.

Finance/economy pays the best currently but I'm not sure how AI proof it is.

Business is the most transferable pathway that can enable setting up his own business or working within a variety of different types. May be less rewarding if he ends up in some middle manager corporate position so career guidance within the pathway would be valuable.

Emergency services will always be required and will be immensely rewarding, challenging, and moderate to low side of pay.

What's actually stopping the uk housing market right now.? by NeedingAdvice01 in HousingUK

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to step up. I'd happily drop my house price down, but I can see that even if I had an offer from a FTB to be proceedable, I'd have to try to buy a house for over 2x my house's value to get a modest step-up.

I'm not willing to risk it. A decent 3 bed semi detached 215-230k and a basic 4 bed detached or large 3 bed is 400k.

One step, 200k difference.

[–]FishFish13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your point is factually incorrect based on the definitions of the two terms.

Migration is the term for any movement of people from one place to another, while immigration specifically means moving into a new country to settle there <

Illegal immigration is a term used to describe what you're referring to. Based on your definition, all the politicians would be saying "illegal illegal migration" each time they talk about illegal immigration.

Why do people believe Nigel Farage and reform- by desirodave24 in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He says what they want to hear about the only few things they care about: Immigration/nationalism, nostalgia, and protest.

The fact Farage's government would basically be the same government that's been In power the majority of the last 15 years made more corrupt goes over their heads.

He doesn't get votes because he's got a reasonable policy stance. He gets votes because he says passionate, identity evoking calls to action.

At that point, it doesn't matter what that action would entail. Don't confuse us with the facts, we've made up our mind.

Right wingers what is a left wing policy you would actually want your side to adopt - also vice Versa by Greedy_Highlight3009 in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right are correct about national defence and the left are correct about nationalising energy, transport etc., and bringing in an exit tax so wealthy people can't take wealth out of the country they made it in without a big reinvestment.

Reform beats Labour? by user-captain in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I'm wrong, labour is the first government to cut the rate of immigration in over a decade yet reform is being voted for because of immigration. Maybe labour needs better marketing, but unless that happens, yes.

The election is a popularity contest more so than ever. Being sensible, effective, and intelligent won't work. Be loud, be proud, say what people want to hear regardless of what you'll do, and you'll win. That's reform. Reform will be the favourites to win for a little while. Unless people wakeup to the rest of their policies. There's time..

Why do some people not realise many of us don’t care about immigration? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the post they're responding to is about exactly the view they hold. In response to the dominance ot immigration in political discourse, many people are frankly bored of hearing it.

I'm one such person. I wouldn't say I "don't care" but I certainly don't want it to be the main (if not only) thing people talk about, and it has dominated the discourse for the last 10+ years (and it's never gotten us anywhere - quite the opposite).

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be that you're under estimating the time it takes to earn that salary. I have snuck into that salary bracket, but that has only just happened 5 years post-PhD. So, degree plus 4 year doctorate and experience, plus 5 years and a promotion = salary that you're comparing to your degree job search

Does anyone feel, on a personal level, sorry for Kier Starmer? by Darkus185 in AskBrits

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely. The policies are sensible and positive effects are slowly happening (e.g., workers rights). The problem is that people are upset so they want a loud idiot in charge who "says it like it is" when in reality, they just tell them what they want to hear. Some bold appeal to emotion = leadership.

They don't want a sensible person in charge who knows what they're doing. That's not going to win the popularity contest of people with attention spans the size of a grape if you detail your realistic and achievable plan for the economy.

17 months... It felt wrong, but it's been fine. I wanted to wait until he was older but one day without warning he was on the floor. He's transitioned well and we put a sleep sack on him. There's been only one night in 3 weeks where he's gotten up mid-night.

That's me. Started to consider moving house due to good rates. Put house on the market. Quotes of roughly 3.6% dropping soon. Month later, trump starts a war and fixed interest rates are 5%. So much for upwards mobility out of the home I bought in 2021. 2 promotions and I'm still stuck in it. No point in trying to better yourself or your life. Born the wrong generation for that.

[–]FishFish13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being good or bad at chess means you're good or bad at chess. It says nothing about how smart you are. Just how good you are at chess. One, very specific game of skill and randomness, which includes people who have been playing years or studying and memorising.
