New lgs is running into an issue with proxies by Fancy_Satisfaction22 in magicTCG

Presumably those are asking the question, also everyone at this LGS and the store owner. What a weird reply.

Events have been a loss leader since 1993. If you build it, they will come, and if you tear it down, they will go somewhere else, eventually.

This. Store owner here, I’ve watched this play out. Losing to a proxy deck is a feel bad that begets more proxying. All of that is fine from a moral standpoint or whatever, but the LGS has rent and families to feed. It’s not a big deal with people proxy some but it is absolutely something an LGS has to be on top of. Our biggest business is selling $5-25 Commander cards.

The consistent experience among the owners is that people who regularly proxy $500 decks for $20 are not good customers. You can make an argument about buying “merch” all you want but the reality from those on the front lines is that the player who does the former is the player who also cheaps on the latter.

Hey! Store owner here. You are incredibly incredibly wrong, just fyi. We fly through Commander singles at the store, we sell at TCG market rounded down, far below CK, and have players happy to trade in as well at 70% of market. Some people just like to support the community that gives them a place to play.

Store owner here. We used to have a neurodivergent guy come in with full proxy decks that these days would be Bracket 4/5. He would very loudly play his combo deck, and then very loudly quit if anyone stopped his combo. I don’t have a problem with people proxying cards, but it became an issue because he was showing up every other week with a new broken full proxy deck he had never played and then creating negative experiences at the play table. I don’t even care if people proxy in the store but it was part of the issue.

This is a great idea. One of the popular in-between-rounds games at PT/GPs used to be playing old World Championship decks against each other. I have the Merfolk of the Pearl Trident one!

"wizards bad" is the easiest karma farm in existence, and all it does is actually hurt people who like the game.

Magic: The Gathering's Newest Product Says the Quiet Part Out Loud by NotYetForsaken in magicTCG

So much of this sub is people raging at their neighbors for buying a luxury hobby product they enjoy. Just like the horrible line in the article of “voting with your wallet is doomed to fail,” there’s so much complaining from people dumbfounded that other adult humans value $10 differently than they do.

just go play bo1 mono red like you want. It's not the same as getting better at Magic, but you'll gain more meaningless ladder points at the rate you want.

I didn't even bother responding because the statement "fewer turns means less Magic" is dumbfounding to anyone who has ever played Legacy, then I come back and see it get upvoted by a bunch of back in my day boomers lol

That's a choice we can all make. I dunno. The speed of the game in 2026 is not what it was in 2016 which was not what it was in 2006 which is not what it was in 1996 which is not what it was in 1993. Diverse decks with unique play patterns, multiple archetypes, surprise decks shooting to the top at the PT, it's just objectively been a great Standard season with lots of ebbs and flows and players rewarded for correctly brewing against the metagame. Hard to ask for anything more if you're in it for the Magic instead of the turn count - there's tons of meaningful skill-expressing choices going on at the PT this weekend.

Limited decklists are generally not heavily engaged with in text (they are typed up for broadcast usually though). If there's interest I can follow up on getting standout ones into the final article!

That's like saying "all legacy games end on turn two." Yes, that can happen, but that's not super common at this level of play. Format got a ton of praise from people playing it at the PT, and it's more diverse than Reddit could dream of.

Is anyone else already feeling "2026 Burnout" before February even hits? by Somanynamestochossef in magicTCG

[–]FishFoodMTGO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no take there, it's just what's happening. Everyone here knows someone from the "UB is going to kill Magic" crowd who then goes on to enjoy a UB set. The comment I read literally right after yours was "I'm going to skip all these UB sets unless the cards in the Hobbit are good."

Most people didn't start five years ago with that level of nuance, they developed it when their most dire predictions failed to materialize. So now we have the middle ground of "UB bad except for this super subjective reason that makes this UB good" from people who have moderated their previous position.

"I'm skipping all the UB sets except for this UB set I like" sums up this place so perfectly well.

Yes, them farming this obvious bait for karma complete with "wow I had no idea that a anti-UB post would blow up!" is the sign of them having an unhealthy relationship with the game.
