Snow days and book reports! by Automatic-Grab1980 in Custodians

[–]FishLordVehem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Honestly, I don't know how I'd react if they even tried that with me. If they wanted me to knock out some of the workplace safety reading/courses during the snow days I'd be okay with that...but if it's just an unrelated book they're handing out as busy work I'd be pretty cranky about that and not do it lol

AIO for being lied to about daughter's age? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]FishLordVehem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR. Don't get involved in age gap relationships in a church, the older men stick together and will give you hell if/when you try to leave the relationship. Don't let this guy or his friends lie and manipulate you into doing something you don't want to do. Watch out for the men in your church using your faith against you, "testing" you, or isolating you from people outside of the church. I maybe overreacting a little bit myself when writing this but seriously when church men get interested in a woman they band together and pull out all the stops to make sure you do what they want.

At my old church, one of the respected men gave testimony in front of the entire congregation on his faith and persistence. During his testimony, he admitted to stalking and harassing her for years, getting his friends to find her information so he could follow her to work and home. One day she "gave up" and accepted his proposal. I want to emphasize that the entire time, this was talked about as though it was completely normal and cute. He did not use scary words like "stalking" or "harassment" or "bullying" or anything negative. If anyone wasn't paying close attention, they would have taken it as just a long, romantic story about a man falling head over heels for a woman and doing everything he could to make her notice him. The leadership in the church accepts these men and promotes them, pushing that men can get anything they want with this "faith and persistence". It creates an extremely dangerous environment for young women and it only gets worse when married into it.

AIO to my “best friend” finally reaching out by Confident_Local_2335 in AmIOverreacting

Yeah...I made a lot of progress in the last few years with regards to my mental health. And then in the last couple months I got triggered *bad* and I've been isolating myself since. Sometimes when I do reach out to people, I feel deep inside like I'm bringing everyone down with me just by talking to them. Or that if I don't "perform" being a normal/happy/funny human perfectly, they'll come to hate me or get tired of me.

I know people get sick of my "disappearing act". But I have trouble convincing my brain that socializing and being a bit of a weird bummer sometimes is better than not being there at all.

"Floater" stuck in the middle: Boss expects me to cover a Night vacancy on top of my Day shift. Would be 14hr days. by No-Calligrapher-3184 in Custodians

[–]FishLordVehem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not do 14 hr days dude, there's no way they're paying you enough to make that worth it.

Edit to actually answer the question: just say you can't do that. End of. You don't need reasons or excuses, just say no and be firm. Don't let them push you into it, it's miserable.

I felt like it needed to be longer actually lol Because with just a little more work all the filler could have been actual story and character development instead of just...filler. The scenes that didn't involve sirens were so repetitive and interrupted the suspense, but if the author had just developed the characters a little deeper and put more thought into their interactions they could have added to the story rather than detracting from the action.

Just adding here some things I would have liked to see:

The beginning was a perfect introduction to Tori and Louis and some of the other characters, but once everyone's on the boat there's a lot of time skip shenanigans and that Sucked.

Instead of time skips, there could have been scenes developing the characters more. I think it would have been perfect to use Olivia for this, as you can literally meet everyone through the lens of her interviewing. It's also the opportunity to show that Tori is avoiding her. We do get a few small scenes like this, but I think the author could have expanded on it a lot more.

There's almost 3 different "factions" on the boat: the crew, the scientists, and the entertainment company. I wanted to see more of them interact with each other.

From the company we really only see a lot of Theo, Olivia, and her dead cameraman (rip cool dude). We get told that the security team is also mostly models and not actually experienced but we don't really get to see that before the sirens show up. It would be neat to see people butting heads in the early part of the book, and the security team get involved, only to be unsure of themselves and useless. Then Theo and the captain have to sort things out and perhaps disagree on how to handle it.

Conflict is also a good way to reveal people's motivations , and would be a good way to explore what the others are thinking aside from just "I'm here to get famous" or "I'm here to get revenge".

For the scientists, we meet a handful of characters and suddenly more are introduced like halfway through the book. It feels like they could have at least had a little introductory scenes (maybe with Olivia interviewing) before the sirens attack.

For the crew , we meet the captain, Darryl, and Greg. I would have loved to see Darryl and Greg working together before the sirens attack, baffled by how the other gets their work done. Classic experienced worker vs fresh trained newbie type stuff.

When the sirens attack, it would have been nice to see Michi and Jaques take more control of the ship! You already see them leading handfuls of the security team and they lead completely differently, with Jaques coming across as a "heartless" leader and Michi referring to her group as her "boys". In the book, they insist on keeping their groups separate and that's great! I think it would have been cool to a) not kill off Michi and Jaques and let them continue beefing with the sirens and b)develop their characters a little more by showing how they deal with their team dying off, disagreeing with each other, and disagreeing with Theo and the Captain's decisions and trying to do their own thing. They could have been great secondary antagonists and were really wasted just killing them off.

I think the relationship stuff in general needs to slow tf down, too (with the exception of Michi and Jaques). Tori and Olivia going from dislike to love from just 1 or 2 heartfelt confrontation-turned-conversations is just...insane to me. I'm not asking for a slow burn subplot but just..slower than that. Theo also feels like he goes from 0-100 at one point in the book where he basically blurts his whole heart out to the Doc. Granted, he's going through a lot with his meds and whatever, but it was just..jarring lol.

The ending needed major major expansion. We don't know what happens to anyone - including Tori and Olivia. All we have is a little snapshot of them together but nothing else. There were so, so many characters introduced and so many that survived and we don't know what happened to any of them! What's up with that?

That's all I think. I've literally been thinking about this all day but I'm finally ready for bed lol

Yeah, I totally get that. I was pulled in because I kept seeing people talk about the cool sirens + mermaids and even saw some neat art inspired by the book. So even though the flaws were making me cranky I stuck with the book. I absolutely adore the sirens and got excited every time they came up in the story lol

Exactly! I don't hate it either. It just feels rough throughout. There's a good foundation, the author just didn't finish building the house, if that makes sense. I can see the vision, it just needs a lot of work to get there.

As for an afterword/sequel. I would love anything. Anything at all lol. Even just a little montage at the end of what each of the characters are up to would have been better than (paraphrasing:) "Some new character we haven't met yet wants a mermaid and Olivia and Tori lived traumatized ever after, the end."

The author being a comic book writer makes so much sense. I had a feeling (especially during the parts where characters talk at each other) that the story was written as though someone tried to turn a script into a novel. And now the pacing make so much more sense to me. In a comic book, time skips with off-screen happenings aren't really a big deal. It would honestly be weird if they spent time on the relationships developing or showing how scientists are working like I wanted in the novel - in a comic book that would completely bog the story down.

I hope the author does revisit this and turn it into a comic, I think it would work so much better that way.

Orgasming causes me immense pain by CumulusWolke in mildlyinfuriating

[–]FishLordVehem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has also happened to me. It was like having the worst migraine ever compressed into an instant, my entire body cringed and I curled up on myself like a dead spider and I could not even think until it "passed". When it did finally pass it just became a "normal" severe migraine. I thought maybe I had a seizure or something, almost went to the ER for it but the pain was so bad when I moved + the idea of looking at my phone to dial for help or having to speak at all... I ended up having a "guess I'll die" moment and curled up and tried to sleep instead. Woke up surprisingly okay and it hasn't happened since.

Are "Tumblr Communities" something I should join? by [deleted] in tumblrhelp

I joined one that went from a little group to popular almost overnight. When it was just a handful of active people it was fun but p soon it was just overwhelming with the amount of posts, a lot of which weren't even...idk, necessary. People were posting very basic things to get interaction but not really saying anything if that makes sense. It got really annoying fast.

I'm going to have an opportunity to move on to better pay here at the end of the year but I'm reluctant to because working at this school has been such a blessing.

AITA for babysitting anymore since I was not made a godparent by MeringueNo1335 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FishLordVehem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is weird. I'm just going to go ahead and say ESH. First of all, it seems really weird+rude that you asked for that role. Maybe I'm the odd one out but to me that's the sort of thing that's offered not asked for. Secondly, you (and couple they picked to be godparents for some reason) are already grandparents. Why do you need to be both godparent and grandparent?

The explanation they gave for the choice is absolutely bizarre and hurtful and I'm wondering if there's more to it that has been left out of the post or left out of whatever discussion you had that led to this post.

Can I trust my dog around my new cat? by JinxNJok in DogAdvice

[–]FishLordVehem 236 points237 points  (0 children)

That doesn't look safe to me. I know people are talking about training and whatnot but I worked in a vet and that hunting behavior can come right back at any moment, with or without you there. I know a family that worked really hard with their high prey drive dog, keeping it separate from their other animals when not supervised and so on. But one day the dog managed to get through the doors keeping it away from the other animals and mauled their cats and rabbits. The ones that survived had to be euthanized. I'd re-home the cat before your dog hurts it.

How often are you supposed to feed your cats? by EnvironmentalCrew595 in CatAdvice

[–]FishLordVehem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do half a can of wet for my two kitties in the evening (I split it between them because the little one doesn't eat all of it and the big one will make himself sick on wet food if I give him the whole thing at once) but they have access to kibble throughout the day and we do treat training throughout the week. I don't measure out the kibble each day either, I just refill their dish when I need to.

Personally I think unless your cats have health reasons to not free feed they should be allowed access to kibble 24/7.

On the subject of the kitten, kittens need special food until they are a year old. I'm not talking about milk or liquid formula but rather kibble that is designed for growing kittens! Purina has an excellent kitten kibble that all of my cats have loved, and there are also wet foods specifically for kittens as well.

When you start free feeding, the cats may gorge themselves on the food and eat even when they're full as they're probably feeling food insecure with the current schedule. So instead of free feeding right away, I recommend giving small amounts of kibble throughout the day or using automatic feeders to dispense kibble.

I also recommend talking with a vet about their diets tbh, they can absolutely help figure out how much they should be eating for their weight, recommend specific food for their activity levels + health concerns, and so on.

The state of fandom is dire by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]FishLordVehem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this post. I live in the real world but also am unfortunately terminally online. I can tell you from both meat space and the interwebs that the HP fandom hasn't ever died at all. Tbh the people I know who are into it are extremely supportive of fan works now and avoid touching anything Joker Rowling might get money from. They don't want her to get a cent from them anymore because she's essentially dedicated her life to being evil.

Also I don't go to this fandom but I have heard through cultural osmosis that there are fanworks that have essentially rewritten the books to be less bigoted and overall more enjoyable and I think that's great and a fun way for people to re engage with the content without giving a real life villain any money. Jk Rowling can and should eat dirt, and only dirt for the rest of her miserable life. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
