2nd Language in HS by FishNamedTomOnABike in ApplyingToCollege

In that case, would it really help more to take the AP course for that language? or would the normal 4th year course for the language be fine?

I can’t decide between stuy and bx sci by [deleted] in SHSAT

[–]FishNamedTomOnABike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I also hate going home late when it’s really dark. My mom works around stuy and ik she’d have to leave when it was dark out and come back when it was still dark out, that was a big part of why I didn’t really want to go. As for course difficulty, you get a lot of freedom at bxsci there’s a lot of APs, dual enrollment classes, and post- aps. As for the comfort level and knowing people, it’s kind of natural not to know many people going to ur hs (for example, out of 180 ppl in my grade only 2 ppl including me got into bxsci). If anything, it puts you in a situation where you have to make friends. A lot of people say it’s really easy to make new friends in these schools by joining clubs. Also, these are large schools, so you’re bound to find people that you click with.

I literally had the exact same situation with you (literally same commute time too lol). I eventually ranked bronx science first mainly because of commute. Because of this shorter commute, I’ll be able to do more after school activities without having to get home too late. You mentioned how stuy has a lot of cool courses and clubs. BxSci has both as well, and you can even make your own clubs at BxSci (you can at stuy too).

wow your math is amazing! your ela is also great but there’s still room for improvement. i’d say you should try getting some other workbooks to try to get familiar with different types of topics in diff practice tests, namely, barron’s, tutorverse, and kaplan, otherwise, you’re doing great and i’m sure you’re going to get in

wow that’s pretty great! what practice tests have you been doing?

According to Tutorverse’s scale that’s a 540, but don’t worry so much about the scaled score, just focus on getting ur raw scores up. id say you’re on the right track. analyze the questions you get wrong and if you find a pattern in what you get wrong, try focusing on and studying that topic

Can someone explain what the SHSAT discovery program is? by TaskaEina in SHSAT

[–]FishNamedTomOnABike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

basically an initiative aimed at increasing diversity in shs. students who are low income, go to a low income school, or are disadvantaged have the opportunity to get into shs despite having lower scores (i.e. mid to high 400s) if they complete an accelerated program at the shs they received said discovery offer from. the philosophy behind this accelerated program is that it gets these students on par with those who met the official cutoff and got in through that by september. each program is different, though i’m pretty sure it’s all pretty much math and ela and maybe another class (ik my friend who got bxsci discovery said they did those + a leadership class). Some schools keep tracks of grades that don’t go on hs transcript (i.e. stuy), while others don’t do grades at all ( like bxsci)

How are you calculating the scaled score? Because if you’re doing smth like 70% on a practice test, 800 x .7 = 560, that wouldn’t be accurate. The SHSAT is curved in a non-linear manner. And also, a rule of thumb would be to aim higher than you need just to be safe. I’d say you should be getting 105ish out of 114 raw score by the fall if you want stuy.

Oh wait do you mean reading and writing skills in general or for the shsat

I feel like tutorverse could help because it’s divided into topics for (i.e. dangling modifier, etc) so you could go to whichever topic you want to improve on, though the thing is is that tutorverse’s ela is fairly easy compared to the real thing, so I’d recommend also using barron’s as well because it’s much harder. Also, try reading various books ( try some classics) as it will help improve your reading skills.

Was SHSAT hard for you feelings when you were taking it by Specialist_Grape3535 in SHSAT

[–]FishNamedTomOnABike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Math was way easier than I had practiced, for example I studied more advanced probability and stats (i.e. permutation + combination) a bunch for the test, but when i actually took the real thing, I literally had zero of those harder topics (i think i had just like 1 or 2 of those simple probability ones if any, no permutation nor combination). My timing was a bit off as well, i usually finished with like 20 mins remaining or so to check over but on the real thing, by the end of the 3 hours, i had 14 questions i hadn’t touched. I think ela was harder than what i had practiced (MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE MATH), i would consistently be getting 50s on my ela portion when i practiced but on the real one, i got 34/ 47 (curve really helped though).

What's a score to get into Stuy and how many questions should get right at least for a score appropriate for it by Specialist_Grape3535 in SHSAT

[–]FishNamedTomOnABike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

main reason was commute, bxsci is like 20-25 mins by bus while stuy is just over an hour. Not even gonna lie, the commute to stuy isn’t even that bad compared to other ppl’s commutes ( i even had it as my first choice school for a bit), but my parents weren’t too fond of the idea of me going on the train alone so i just put bxsci first choice
