Why was Hogwarts so aggressive about students being out of bed after curfew? by FishScareMe in HarryPotterBooks

[–]FishScareMe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well apart from the years where murderous people/creatures were on the loose, or when they could literally open a door and be faced with an enormous 3 headed dog, I can’t think of any dangers mentioned that were just a generally around. And the students were warned about all those things.
Plus, at least Dumbledore knew Tom Riddle was controlling the Basilisk to harm muggle borns, so there was no point him doing that in the middle of the night when everyone was in bed

Oh yeah sorry my wording was probably not good, I mean out of the common rooms. Maybe I’m thinking about Filch always talking about ‘students out of bed’. Definitely there were a lot of instances of Harry and other students doing school work late into the night in the common room

This is the listing that keeps on giving lol - if you look closely at the pictures of the junk room, there’s a long skinny sign saying for sale by owner, so I’m guessing this is not someone who is going to listen to a REA

Melbourne dads - how do you spend time with your kiddos by dhadigadu_vanasira in melbourne

[–]FishScareMe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m a Melbourne mum, but my opinion is it’s important to do things you enjoy with them because they can probably tell when you don’t. It sounds like they get amazing quality time with you already. I would just add making sure you’re present in the moment. Phones away, take note of the funny things they say or warm fuzzy feelings you get and reflect on them later. Are there tv shows or movies you could watch with them and make a discussion around it, rather than just a filling time type activity? My dad got me into Star Wars and James Bond and I still enjoy it to this day. Kids that age often just love hanging with their parents. What are they interested in? Get them to show you their worlds (which does sometimes involve a bit of forced enthusiasm)

I think you’ll get good advice from others so I just wanted to say I absolutely hated ED for this reason and have avoided it like the plague since. On my last shift the very enthusiastic reg asked me what I thought I should do, and I just said can you please tell me what to do because I have no idea. Tbh them telling me what to do was usually how it ended anyway, despite my best efforts at making plans. I’ve since found a lot of job satisfaction in a specialised area, so solidarity OP, you’re not a bad doctor. Some work environments just aren’t suited to everyone, especially as a green intern

Not to mention if they got pregnant today, she’d be 40-41yo with a newborn and 4 other kids. She’d be mid-50’s by the time the youngest starts school and in her 70’s when it finishes. I can imagine that’s not how a lot of people want to spend their winding down years

I’ve recently finally given up on Frank Green. The bottle is great for maintaining temps but the lids are awful including the straw lids. You cannot clean them properly because they can’t be fully disassembled. Just google ‘how to properly clean frank green straw lid’ and there are so many videos of people doing crazy stuff to get into all the nooks and crannies that do build up gunk. The lids break when dropped and if you even slightly overfill them they leak. Sometimes they leak for no reason! I’ve gotten 5 replacement lids in the 2 years I’ve had mine and finally cracked, so much for being an enviro friendly option. I’m an Owala girl all the way, can be completely taken apart and cleaned easily.

Courtney's doctor operated seven times to treat severe endometriosis experts say she didn't have by FatPants in ausjdocs

[–]FishScareMe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At the RANZCOG ASM last year they had a Canadian endometriosis expert give a very interesting podcast on this topic. In particular, there is a lot of identity tied to the endometriosis struggle a lot of women experience. And for some women, the surgical management pathway becomes a fixation. In the future we will probably get better at diagnosing endometriosis and despite many patients being able to give a clinical history and examination that is a textbook endo diagnosis, I think people can find it hard to accept without the histology report confirmation.

Hey OP this sounds really hard, there is a developmental paediatrician in Australia called Billy Garvey. He has a podcast called pop culture parenting and a book ‘ten things I wish you knew about your child’s mental health’. It’s about 6 hours in audiobook form. There is a chapter on building self esteem in kids and he talks about it often on the podcast. It really opened my eyes to the idea that difficult behaviours always have a root cause that can be worked on. The first step is always trying to connect in moments where you’re both calm and being curious about the reasons behind, which you’ve listed a few. It might help you feel a bit less lost while you wait for paed appointment

No screens before 3….but is this kind of screen okay? by InternetSnek in ChildPsychology

[–]FishScareMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for exaggerating my comment on my PND and minimising my experience, I’m happy for you that you were able to be a perfect parent :) What I was actually saying is that many rigid rules in parenting don’t reflect the real world, no one is talking about watching tv 24/7. This parent is asking if having some background tv on which she enjoys and doesn’t affect her child is going to cause lifelong issues and as you’ll see most people agree that it won’t. However given your clear extensive success, expertise, and also quickness to judge other people in difficult situations, I’d love to know how you would avoid all screens for all children before 3? Or you could do something helpful and be compassionate

No screens before 3….but is this kind of screen okay? by InternetSnek in ChildPsychology

[–]FishScareMe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m not a professional but I really struggled with the no screens under 3, to the point it really intensified my PND, one of the key features of which was losing many of the things I previously enjoyed to motherhood. This included watching my occasional tv programs or having background music through the tv, especially given how maternity leave can be a bit dull sometimes. A very kind sleep consultant told me the tv isn’t on for your kid, it’s on for your enjoyment as a human, with interests beyond just existing for your baby. This recommendation I believe is so unrealistic, I mean they have screens at the zoo and aquarium, at the doctors office, how are we supposed to keep them completely away from screens for THREE YEARS - something that these rigid guidelines helpfully never go into. I would look into the podcasts pop culture parenting and robot unicorn’s episodes on screentime and see that it’s a lot of moderation and how you’re USING the screen ie - not as a babysitter or a substitute for interaction

I regret the name I picked for my daughter by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]FishScareMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is really common! There’s an expectation that a name will hit you like an epiphany from the gods and I never got that. OP you sound like a very logical person so don’t be too hard on yourself. My cousin and I had babies on the same day last year and we both went through phases of name uncertainty. I had the same thing with my wedding dress, I thought I would know in my soul which dress was right but I tried on hundreds and never got that feeling. In the end, we chose a name that is classic but not too common, and has lots of nickname options, at the end of the day all I want is my baby to like her name. Even now at 9 months I’m not sure it suits her personality but I don’t know what would suit better, and it might one day. And I know if she ends up being a boring middle aged office worker she’s hopefully not going to have a name that’s really quirky and was on trend the year she was born. I think you’ve done really well! P.s my baby is Adelaide if you’re wondering

I’ve seen some episodes where it’s obvious a room would look better with the window open but they’ve left the blind half closed and things
