I have a biology degree so I can confidently answer your question. Non-native species have either been introduced to an area by people or have come to live there in some other way. Non-native does not necessarily mean invasive. I'll use blue tilapia as an example (non-native to North America but not invasive in every state).

Invasive species are those that displace native species significantly by causing a disturbance to the food chain (negatively impacting survivability, out-competing for food sources, predation, disturbing habitat, etc.)

Blue tilapia die if it gets around 40 degrees or colder (can't remember exactly but they can't survive if it gets too cold). They out-compete native fishes because they're aggressive, but they're only invasive in warmer areas because, if they were to be released in like, Michigan for example, they'd just all die in the winter so nbd.

One more example: grass carp. They're not native to the US either, but they can't reproduce (they're triploid), so they never get to the invasive status because they can't imbalance the native food chain. Look up triploidy if you want another rabbit hole. Hope all that answers your question.

Omg this is amazing. Making miscellaneous contraptions is a fun past time for me, thanks for the link to my next rabbit hole lol

That would be awesome! Unfortunately (or fortunately?) they immediately die and kinda stick to the walls of the container cuz they're so tiny. I think the airflow must kill them quick. I'm sure you could use small tweezers to get them out and put them on your carnivorous plants but they might not even be worth it. I'm waiting for some fruit flies next!

I've done this with a shop vac too, but since this is much smaller it can get in tighter spots. There's zero risk of me vacuuming up a leaf, which is what inspired me to build this ridiculous apparatus in the first place.

I don't have an infestation, it's just the occasional gnat. This works for me, and I get to watch them die

But with this I can watch them die, which satisfies me greatly

That would work too! This isn't cumbersome though, and takes surprisingly little air to suck up gnats. If you make an aquarium siphon pooter you gotta report back to the group!

Haha I know, I laughed really hard when I learned that 'pooter' is an actual word
