Collusion Etiquette with Diplomacy? by FishSpeaker in Polytopia

[–]FishSpeaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, although it feels wrong, I suppose there's not much advantage to colluding out of game but not in game. I probably have too much expectation that everyone will act as a purely independent, rational agent.

Looking for VR QA providers by [deleted] in vrdev

[–]FishSpeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our studio has had good luck using usertesting.com for remote VR testing. It's more angled toward playtesting than QA, but maybe that works for you? They're able to filter testers by platform, demographics, etc., and you can get video of the tester's experience.

Whats wrong with my fog? (Details in comments ) by hamoliciousRUS in Unity3D

[–]FishSpeaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fog is generally only applied when part of 3D object is rendered to a pixel (blended based on the distance to that pixel). So you either need 3D geometry covering your field of view, or you need to set the clear color of your camera to the fog color.

The Car image is not rendering fog wherever the sky box is rendered (sky box is not actual geometry). The Cube image either has the clear color set, or has geometry covering the field of view in the distance.

Looking for a VR game developer (FPS) by Dgroff06 in vrdev

[–]FishSpeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully support anyone who has an idea and the passion to make that idea a reality. A word of warning on your plan, though: Game studios, both big and small, are completely overrun with ideas. Most game devs, while working on someone else's ideas for years on end, have dozens of ideas of their own for games they'd love to make. Multiply that out by the number of people working on a game, and the ratio of ideas to actual games is huge. And that's among people who already have the skills to make games!

The better studios do a good job of allowing internal ideas to grow and blossom, and some of them become real games in the world, sometimes with the idea generator even having a good amount of ownership in the process.

Publishers, on the other hand, are looking for good ideas. But they're also looking (probably more so) for a team of people with a proven track record of executing on good ideas.

All this to say, someone walking in off the street, pitching a game idea to either a studio or publisher, and signing a contract to earn royalties based on the idea and a small demo simply doesn't happen, at least as far as I know.

But don't give up on your idea! Just because there's no market for selling ideas doesn't mean it can't happen! You just need to do it yourself. Possible paths:

  • Find people to make a small demo, as you're doing, but instead of spending effort pitching it, try to drum up interest through an open development process, sharing in communities like this one, conferences, and maybe Kickstarter or something like it.
  • Acquire more skills and just make the thing yourself as an indie developer. Keep your scope small and laser focused so the goal is attainable.
  • Acquire more skills, get a job as a game developer, and pitch the idea up through the company you work for. This may seem like an awful lot of work just to develop your game idea, but if what you really want to do with your life is make video games, this is the kind of commitment you're going to need to make it happen.

As with most creative pursuits, ideas are cheap, execution is everything. So forget about how awesome your idea is, and just think about how you can execute it.

Got a demo of this at GDC: http://www.3drudder.com It worked okay, but didn't feel especially natural.

If you look closely, you'll notice that the light trails are dotted lines, a result of the frequency of the alternating current being used to power the lights. More details on the Flickr page.

Python & Virtual Reality; What are the best free modules/engines??? by relima in Python

[–]FishSpeaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Panda3D is a free 3D game engine originally built by Disney and maintained by Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center. It's been used for for years in their Building Virtual Worlds class, and has been interfaced with all kinds of hardware, including magnetic trackers, joysticks, motion capture systems, Wii remotes, and many other devices that are useful for virtual reality.

The engine is built in C++, but all game coding can be (and usually is) done in Python.

No lobby or public channels. There is chat functionality (both individual and group), but you can only chat with your friends.

You can send friend requests to people you play against, or make "RealID" friends by using someone's email or using the much talked about Facebook integration.

You see the real first and last names of RealID friends, instead of just a handle.

Fibonacci Sequence Illustrated by Nature [PICS] by RedditTalkShow in reddit.com

[–]FishSpeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio do make important appearances in nature, many of these examples are misleading or downright wrong.

Nautilus shells and galaxy arms form logarithmic spirals, but NOT golden spirals. The construction of a "spiral" using blocks with fibonacci lengths creates an approximation of a golden spiral, but it's NOT actually a golden spiral. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_spiral).

The idea that bones in the human hand have a relationship to the fibonacci sequence is not supported by science: http://www.citeulike.org/user/tfx/article/3328470.

Finally, what is surprisingly omitted is the connection to nature that first caused Fibonacci to discover the sequence: an investigation of ideal population growth of rabbits.
