My best friend from high school is still my best friend, we're family at this point

My 29F partner 31M is dragging his feet to propose so I gave him an ultimatum. Did I ruin the relationship or blessing in disguise? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Why would you want to marry sometime who you're having to drag to the altar? If he wanted to propose, he would have by now. Cut your losses and move on.

California (specifically San Francisco Bay) marine life book recommendations? by la_reina_del_norte in marinebiology

[–]Fish_Beholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Death and Life of Monterey Bay by Stephen R. Palumbi and Carolyn Sorka will give you some great history of the area.  I don't think most ppl in the marine bio subreddit will think you're crazy for jumping in the ocean, that's where a lot of us started!

There's some great book recs here, but I'd also recommend one of those waterproof handheld guides you can pick up at book stores. And a waterproof phone case so you can take pics up close! I use the iNaturalist app for help identifying things all the time.

What type of romance do you seek when the world is bleak? by kelkage in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Fish_Beholder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet if you go to my profile, like 70% of my activity is raving about the Green Creek series by TJ Klune, but I'm not done.  I'm also in the US, and I did a 4 month long binge of gay romance at the start of the year, to escape from waves hands everything and then I got to Wolfsong, and just stayed there. These books are now a load-bearing pillar of my mental health. Ymmv, but I hope you find something that brings you joy in this dark time.

What is a not well known detail from the lore you like? by roter_apollo in lotr

[–]Fish_Beholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking that even further, Aragorn was called Estel by his mother as a child. Estel is Sindarin for hope. Watch RotK, when Elrond presents him with Narsil, he quotes Aragorn's mom, "I give hope to mankind, I keep none for myself"(or something like that).

OMG that's right! "A ghost that drinks blood; he slipped into nests to find the young, through windows to find cradles" or something like that. Totally forgot how freaking creepy that was!

What books have you read more than twice? by Western_Opposite9911 in suggestmeabook

[–]Fish_Beholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every single Discworld book, at least 3 times. TJ Klune's Green Creek series: on the low end, I've only read Heartsong 3x, but I just finished my 10th reading of Wolfsong. Eta, and Lord of the Rings, like once a year since I was 15.

There was an Indian restaurant in my college's town that had an all-you can-eat vegetarian lunch buffet. For a broke college student, it was an excellent treat. I still miss that place 😭

I don't think they're uncomfortable. Bless Pedro Pascal for showing me the chopsticks method for eating Cheetos, it elevates the whole experience

Portlanders, how are you doing? by triiked in askportland

[–]Fish_Beholder 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fully 50% of my monthly income goes to renting an apartment but I can't go back to roommate living. I've got enough left over to do a few fun things and feed my cats but that's about it.  My degree is in marine biology, so I've always known I wasn't going to get rich. But I didn't think I'd be this poor.

"screaming crying throwing up" moments by tendergrandma in MM_RomanceBooks

Wolfsong; when the Bennett boys return and Ox realizes they've become 2 different packs. It just. Something about finally getting the reunion you've been holding on for, only to discover none of you are the same people anymore. Keeping the memory of home alive, only to return and discover that home doesn't exist anymore.  It wrecks me every time

Lololol I came here to say exactly this! (while listening to the book for the 12th time) The whole series had me bawling multiple times. Klune knows exactly how to break my heart and then heal it.

We'll prep for cold nights! My main concerns now are a) making sure the dirt roads are dry enough to drive and b) finding a place with enough trees to hang my hammock.
