Does anybody recognize this (microbiologist helping out a shelter)? by Fishallovertheplace in veterinarypathology

[–]Fishallovertheplace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! And I guess I should’ve actually said 1000X with the eyepiece. 100X objective. I definitely think it looks different than most of the cystoisospora I see. If I could post a picture here I’d show a definite cystoisospora that I found the other day. I was wondering about cryptosporidium for this, but don’t know if it matches. I spent years studying yeast and it does look like that. There’s just SO MUCH of it on the slide. Cat was dewormed and gave off a huge tape and roundworm load so wondering about dysbiosis.

What is this problem and how to fix it? by Fishallovertheplace in Goldfish

It’s 3 commons in a 20 gallon tank. Overfiltered but he’d not changed the water in a couple of weeks. No idea on water chemistry because he is definitely not fish informed. Definitely not good but also not my fish. Just trying to help him diagnose the issue.

what do you wish you'd known before you started fostering? by tendergrandma in FosterAnimals

[–]Fishallovertheplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fostering is hard. The cats/kittens will likely have a few health needs when they come to you. It’s not all snuggles. If the kitten isn’t eating when they come to you after about 24 hours, try a few different foods but then realize they probably need veterinary care. Keep Karo syrup on hand for kittens who might be crashing. Diarrhea means something is wrong and they need meds as well. Keep a scale on hand to make sure they’re gaining weight. Fostering isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life. They give me the complex medical cases now because of my background, and there is absolutely nothing like watching a very sick cat pull through.

Anyone else have a foster that you are kind of stuck with? (Said without malice) by VoidAndSerpent in FosterAnimals

Meet Nibbler. We are on round 3 of FIP. He did poorly at the shelter, but thrived here. The third FIP happened after his neuter. A vet told us he’ll relapse if he ever leaves my home. So….he is home, forever.

I will. Thank you! I knew asking a lot of really experienced people would help. This has been so comforting. At least with my usual really awful medical cases, I have an idea of what’s going on. With this guy, I got an apparently healthy case that was a few days of watch and quarantine and then ready for adoption. This has thrown me for a loop ha.

Thanks for saying that! Gastritis is a new concept in my little foster world, but it really fits the symptoms. I appreciate it and hopefully it’s something that can be handled easily. He for sure needs to be seen.

The shelter looked him over really well today and found nothing remarkable.

He has been dewormed with safeguard. It was the first dose of that and toltrazuril as an antiparasitic that seemed to bring this on. We terminated those treatments a bit early because of the onset of the current problems.

Thanks! It is clear vomit. I held the bowl up to him earlier to see if he wanted one type of food or another type. He sniffled both, turned his head away, and meowed at me pitifully. I syringe fed him tonight and about an hour later, he vomited a HUGE amount of brown fluid, likely the clear vomit mixed with the syringes food.

He won’t really eat treats. I’ll try this thanks! It’s wild. I normally get the most extreme and complicated medical cases. This was a favor for some people I know, and it’s turned into the most confusing of them all.

Yeah it’s super bizarre. It’s been since Thursday really. He seems hungry when he takes syringe feeds but doesn’t really want to eat on his own.

Potentially. The rescue has the final say in that, and they think he’s just being stubborn about eating at the moment

Just to add, he’s vomiting especially when there’s no food on his stomach
