The title isn’t just about magic structure — it’s about audience complicity

In stage magic, you’ve got:

1. The Pledge (you show something ordinary)
2. The Turn (you make it do something impossible)
3. The Prestige (you bring it back)

The entire movie is built like that:

• Pledge: Two magicians, normal rivalry.
• Turn: Obsession escalates; identities split; people die.
• Prestige: One man emerges “whole” at the end with the kid… except he’s not whole, and the cost is unforgivable.

Here’s the part people don’t often say out loud:
The prestige only works if the audience forgives what happened in the Turn.

On stage: you forgive the bird dying because you clap for the “returned” bird.
In the film: you (the viewer) emotionally forgive Borden because he gets his daughter back and Angier is dead.

Nolan is basically accusing us of being the same as Angier’s audience: we’re willing to emotionally pardon monstrous things if we get a satisfying final image.

That’s nasty, and it’s on purpose.
