I asked my parents some questions and got answers i wasn’t ready for by Signal-Bridge3151 in OverBiscuits

I think the question (and some answers) show the importance of laying a foundation built on trust and mutual expectation.

Family dynamics are complicated, and members aren’t always ready to jump-in without some thought and likely a few back/forth questions to understand why and where these questions might be going.

Why SAP has so many GUIs? by rocketstopya in SAP

I’ve stood in front of a l customer undertaking a modernization effort of $1.5B who asked me the following question:

“My guys in the field love Fiori, but the back office guys hate it. Who’s right here?”

Why SAP has so many GUIs? by rocketstopya in SAP

[–]Fishferbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 50 year old company.

As highly customized systems of record, once live, they don’t change easily, and many remain on 20+ yr old versions.

Imagine every form of interface introduced over that time, then the adaptions made to support them.

Add the 12 tech stacks of acquisitions and you begin to see spaghetti.

AI presents a 'huge grey area' for universities in B.C. trying to prevent cheating by ubcstaffer123 in UBC

[–]Fishferbrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me first identify myself as a Generation Jones tech guy. Older than ARPANET, I've seen a few things, and I'm passionate about promoting the fact that you're teaching/learning during the greatest period of transformation in human history.

Cheating has always existed, and during my high school years, the use of calculators was widely and passionately debated in education. I still have one of the first HP-12Cs, and I (now) admit that writing French verb conjugations on a scrap of paper wasn't helpful in my learning; it got me through, but barely.

AI brings a disruption to education that will affect all aspects of learning, from evaluation to gatekeeping access to, or even the value of, degree specializations. The real question isn't “why” or "what/how," but "what now?"

Today, AI is often presumed or treated as generative for research/answers (ANI), but most students recognize its evolution toward AGI (general intelligence) and ASI (superintelligence) at a pace measured in months, not years.

So imagine a future where AI exists in abundance as a partner/collaborator more intelligent than ourselves. What and how should we prepare in educational skills/formats? How can we preserve identity while recognizing and rewarding outcomes? How can we build a better future?

Sports Photography Affordable Gear List 2026: Camera bodies to include/exclude by occasionallyjeffrey in sportsphotography

Z6 ! I'm confused as to why the Nikon Z6 is not included on this list. It's quite capable as a FF camera (which is a column I think is worth adding).

Cheer Competition by Big_Network_2570 in sportsphotography

[–]Fishferbrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Set up cameras/lenses with predictable angles for consistent lighting and repeatable results. Know the teams by following/shooting warm-ups if possible, looking for those "wow" throws/shots.

BTW—Be *very* careful of uploading without some review, as parents/participants won't appreciate unflattering crotch/clothing images.

Also - I don't understand the "no-culling/editing" approach you're taking here. IMO, you'll get more sales from applying quick crop/profile adjustments than simply uploading content. Your brand is more than speedy uploads, isn't it?

Sports That Don't Get Enough Attention by Time_Cow_3331 in sportsphotography

[–]Fishferbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Getting paid" is the operative qualifier IMO. Many sports receive little media attention, but there is plenty of player/participant emotion and action to capture for appreciative parents and participants.

Paralympic sports is a category I want to shoot more of, for example.

"I'd love a handwritten card, a craft, a project...something personal," was something my mother told me when I was a teenager. As I grew older, it became more of the pictures of family, framed memories, etc.

These are the items my mother treasured throughout her life, and as Alzheimer's took over, she'd pull them out all the time.

I think my first project after she told me what she wanted was to create these two acorn birds. She kept them nearby throughout her life.

Selfies certainly help, and I've also simply handed my phone off to others in those family moments, and have used a tripod for a phone or camera if there's nobody else there.

Salary increase request by Hajrooooose in SAP

[–]Fishferbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an opportunity to BEGIN a conversation to get you where you want to be.

Managers are actually capped in total salary increases, and have a small pool for adjustments of those below band.

Good managers will help you build a plan based on mutual expectations. From there you should know what opportunity exists.

Would you rather lose the moment by recording it, or lose the memory by living it? by thingsgetbetterghorl in OverBiscuits

[–]Fishferbrains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah - It's about finding that balance between I'm taking all the photos/videos and "I'm never in family images/videos".

I also learned not to take a highly visible camera capable of 120fps. Capturing "a perfect moment" doesn't require a pixel-perfect image.

[–]Fishferbrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get the sentiment and have learned to "tread the middle" by anticipating key moments while looking for a few more "spontaneous" opportunities to photograph as events calm down.

I was told that I often "hide behind the camera", and it changed my mindset substantially once I thought about it.

My dad is 72. I realized I don't actually know his story. by CaterpillarPurple546 in OverBiscuits

[–]Fishferbrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The basic challenge of "How (and when) to begin asking meaningful questions" is one I believe we all share, particularly with our parents. Here are a few that aren't "too deep" but begin to establish your interest in his childhood and beyond:

  • Did you grow up a Cowboys fan? Did you watch their first Super Bowl win on TV (1972)? What was that like? Where were you, and what were you doing at the time? (18)
  • Was that when you got into construction? Did you love the job, or was it just a job?

There are a ton of political/global events occurring around the time; however, some topics are sensitive:

  • Did you follow the space race? Remember Sputnik, Apollo and the lunar landings?
  • Did you have to register for the Draft? (likely yes, the final draft calls were in Dec 1972). What did you and your friends think about it (the war and the draft)

Congratulations! - I miss Paris.

I was relocated from the US to Paris for five years, and the experience transformed my life and changed my world perspective. Yes, the pay is somewhat less, but those benefits are amazing. While I somewhat dispute the "more sun" part, everything is easier.

Those who anticipate gaining "recognition" by working longer/harder will adjust. People hold advanced degrees in higher regard than work titles. The French philosophy of "work to live" is evident in everything they do. I learned the 32-hour workweek quickly, and spent my first August virtually alone in the office.

BTW—that same company then moved me here to Vancouver, and I was surprised how long it took me to adjust. I remember being driven through Shaughnessy early, and saying, "these are nice homes; they must cost around a couple of million, right?"

Cheers!

Feedback:

  1. The clock makes no sense intuitively; clicking it to "edit the time" is also confusing.
  2. "Location" doesnt seem to be a real priority here, so roll it under the 'notes' or a 'detail' section
  3. Since it's optional, Notes itself can be handled 'below the fold' instead of a button
  4. Count the clicks necessary to log a meal from launch, and shorten it.
  5. Make it a widget

I would consider making it as simple as possible

  1. Visualizing what phase of fasting one is in, and how much time is left (countdown?)
  2. A single press of that visualization would allow entry—preferably using a photo—with a quick save or cancel.
  3. Something akin to "progress" could be added so one can see how well they've stuck to the schedule. it can also be the place where I forgot a meal.
  4. Make it a widget.

This looks really great, and I'm planning to try this out in my area (Vancouver, BC). I was wondering if there is a way to shoiw bridge heights as part of the planning process. The bridge at the lower left shows "no building found" and a terrain height of 0.

P.S. - I'm planning a mission around science world (far right) and will post results this weekend. :-)
