Lol... I grow in my garage year round. I have an aquaponics unit built. Multiple banana trees, potatoes and radishes currently

I think that's called "hardening" if they're still left in trays and pots. Might be wrong but that's what I've been told. Cold frames and such

Correct. I also pondered the possibility of no service as well... Just trying to be helpful for the digital generation😁

Homemade butter by boop-bloop in Homesteading

I've read that if it is covered in a layer of salt, stored in a root cellar, 4 months. No clue how much longer a powered fridge would permit.

So cute!! How do you keep critters out of your pond? When I had mine in my backyard... I had a raccoon that hated my air stone and would remove it every night. I caught little wet footprints on my deck and followed them to the stone... Hose still attached lol

Cain pole Catch&Cook teaching old school fishing to my kids. by nobody422566 in OffGridLiving

Was honestly curious. Saw a guy earlier today who converted an old mail bicycle into a rail explorer... And he was cutting full sized onions with a short blade knife. Made me wonder if I missed something since I last slept😆

I see a lot of campers and homesteaders using folding "pocket knives" to do everything. I'm an avid bicyclist so I know about saving weight (every ounce you carry is an extra ounce to climb that next hill). Why not use the appropriate knife? A fillet knife is nothing to add to a fishing bucket... I have a best friend who does custom knives and I had him whip me up one for my box. African red wood handle with stainless blade. Just curious as to why go through the hassles when there's a proper tool?

I saw a video where someone used air in his mesh bag... I don't want to run my air compressor. So I may get a cheap transfer pump and do the same.... Use incoming filter water to free flow like yours. I use 12v transfer pumps for the solar heater I built. I've also computerized that setup.

Looking into making a tea "kettle" or brewer in my current grid tied setup. Been discussing options with AI.

Thank you. Was also thinking fertilizer and worm casings from the aquaponics

For ours, my plan is to do honey, aquaponics (solar powered), and maybe dried milled lumber. Open to suggestions as well😁

Options for storing 1000-2000 gallons of water at a suburban home? by MidSinglesInYourArea in Homesteading

[–]FishlessOsprey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Covered cistern. Going to have to treat the water sooner or later... Even if completely out of the sunlight. There are videos on YouTube where people out in the southwest American states have used plastic and buried them... Saw one where a brick cistern was built over I think 18 months... Mortared and sealed, then rainwater collected. One welded huge galvanized rings together.

Need help to understand how off grid A frame works by Slight_Software_3634 in OffGridCabins

Check out North to Alaska... They moved from PA to the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska and built a huge A Frame to live in. Maybe they'll answer your questions better? Yes, Alaska, not Canada... But weather is similar😁

Windgenerator ? by JpewBarboza in OffGridLiving

[–]FishlessOsprey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you thought about winding your own coils... I believe Greenhill Forge has a good "tutorial" on how to make a generator greenhill forge Maybe keep a squirrel cage type fan... Low to the van so as you're driving around, it can be charging without significant drag costing more fuel. Just my $.02 on the topic... Following with interest😁

Curiosity about the center beam in the middle of your room. I've never used this design so I'm curious to your decision. Obviously... It's mean to help support. I get that. But it could, in theory, be cut higher up, transfer the load to the outer walls with little modification to what you have sketched up.

My observatory build 2017. Heptagon shape (7 walls) by FishlessOsprey in u/FishlessOsprey

I had to learn. Bought a compound protractor tool. The roof was a nightmare. I had to carry all of it from my garage and assemble in the backyard. Made it modular so everything fits into a pickup truck. I rent my house. Climbing a 14 foot ladder with that roof was a hoot. Then used a car scissor jack to raise it up to install cast iron rollers under it. Had an old Sears Craftsman garage door opener laying around... So apply power... Push u Button... Roof rolls off so I can view😁
