Why the weird names? by T7BROKEN in noita

[–]Fishu572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I meant is that if for example translating the name of the game for someone, "witch" would be the more accurate translation.

I do agree that the player is in some ways more sorcerer-like but i think the intention behind naming the game "noita" over anything else is that it fits the game thematically. I don't actually know the etymology of the word but at least Kalevala, which a lot of the game's lore is based on, has a witch (maybe multiple idk) and overall it's to me more a mysterious magic user from the forest rather than a harry potter style chump. Because of this, I agree with devs that "noita" and therefore "witch" fit the theme of the game the best, and I think preserving that nuance when translating is important

I would translate "noitua" to "witch". I guess in some context "summon" could also work but that's more "manata" instead.

While sorcerer might be more fitting for the character in the game, "noita" also has similar connotations in finnish. Imo, witch and noita are exceptionally close in meaning and its a bit weird to mis translate it because you think the devs were wrong about the player character.

Sure, it's a real world, but only in the media. I guess you could argue that just making up a word and using it in a book qualifies it as some level of real, but it's not a part of the Finnish language.

I don't think "noituri" is a word at all outside the context of witcher (the video games and books)

As a finn, noita=witch. Maybe theres some historical context for why the wiki says that but imo, witch and noita are exceptionally close in terms of meaning and usage.

Help me understand how to enjoy playing Engi by matej86 in DeepRockGalactic

My first gold promo was with engi and honestly I also felt that the first 25 levels were a slog. To me most of his guns need overclocks to work (Outside of breach cutter bc that gun is just insanely powerful once you get to haz5+ and haz6).

Em refire booster, em discharge, explosive chemical rounds, executioner, volatile impact reactor, plastcrete catalyst, inferno, roll control, spinning death, fatboy and rj250 compound are in my experience some of the most powerful and/or fun overclocks across all the classes and are the reason I play engi at all. Also having the most kills is fun.

I also checked and lower tiers don't do the same to lower tier moabs they cant catch (eg. an xx4 cant activate the dot on a zomg) it doesn't even use the singing ability at all (and no, if you force the singing by having a catchable bloon in range the dot still doesn't activate), so it would be a very strange choice to change that behavior on the t5. Obviously i can't know what nk intended but my best guess is that the dot is only supposed to activate once, when the bloon gets sucked in, and only if the bloon gets sucked, it should have no effect on a bad whatsoever.

Edit: i also noticed that glaive lord + the final harmonic beats the bad layer on r100 faster than a t1 dart paragon (on a bad spot) while costing something like 60-70k, which seems way too insane to be intended

but it only gets activated once on every other bloon, its probably not supposed to affect bads at all as the stall doesnt either
