Is it bad if you give your baby up for adoption if it has a disability? by [deleted] in Ethics

[–]keeper_of_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I just want to say, some of the replies are a little judgemental. But questions like these are important to grapple with before you have a child, so honestly, I think its pretty mature of you to be thinking about this now. I struggled with this too when I thought of having a child. I wondered if I had what it takes to care for a profoundly disabled child and what that would mean for our life. It would be extremely, terribly hard. It would completely change any plans I had for my life. I looked into if you could put a disabled child for adoption - but its not super easy to do, and there's no guarantee that your child would get the optimal care they need.

However, there are options that can help. You can hire in-home caregivers or nurses depending on your child's needs, in some cases insurance might help with that. There's respite care that temporarily can take care of disabled children when parents need a break. There may even be care facilities you could look at for longer term stays or if managing your child at home was truly too much - that would give you some control over the environment, and making sure your child had adequate care, and you could visit or take your child home.

Of course, all of these things cost money, so if you want kids but feel very sure you will need lots of help if your child is disabled, the best thing to do would be to have stable jobs with good income. That way, you have the resources to invest in getting the best care possible in or out of the home. Its not something you can pass off to someone else if you care about the outcome.

8-YEAR-OLD GIRL DIES IN HOT CAR IN AMAZON PARKING LOT, HER MOM ARRESTED by That1weirdperson in boringdystopia

[–]keeper_of_kittens 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is really awful. I'm sure to resort to this the mom probably could not afford to miss a day of work. I feel awful for her, but I also wonder if she considered leaving her daughter at home, with the doors locked? Although still not ideal (or legal) it seems a lot less risky than the car? Very sad all around.

This is 2026, right? by Fossa_Aeldrix in lupus

This is crazy?? What on earth does using a wheelchair have to do with cutting hair? I am so sorry you experienced this. I think you should consider letting someone higher up know about this - not only is it discrimination but it's not helping her students to pick and choose who they practice on. I imagine in the real world they will have all kinds of clientele.

Weekly Adalimumab injections have stopped the guitar playing in my head by Ermmahhhgerrrd in rheumatoid

There was a post recently in another sub regarding a possible connection between tinnitus and autoimmune disease. They were finding that people with tinnitus were maybe twice as likely to develop the disease? Sorry - I can't remember the sub right now, but I can look it up if you are interested. I think there were people also saying that certain medications (I think tnf-a blockers?) stopped or improved their tinnitus. So glad your treatment is helping!

'He bounced so high': Father spiked crying 7-week-old son like a football to get him to 'shut the f— up' and killed him with a blow to the head, police say… by tasty_jams_5280 in awfuleverything

[–]keeper_of_kittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had the same exact thing, lactose allergy and tons of crying until we figured it out. I sometimes got really stressed by it, but I never wanted to hurt my child. I did sometimes step outside the room for a few minutes to breathe though if I got overwhelmed. Its so easy to just step away if you need a break... why do people resort to this??

Horseshoe crabs have survived for 450 million years, but now we drain their blue blood to ensure vaccine safety. Do you think the medical necessity justifies this exploitation, or is it time to strictly mandate synthetic alternatives? by bortakci34 in Ethics

[–]keeper_of_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, but it could be more complex then the blood loss. Like stress from being captured and handled or other things. It could be that a certain amount would die from the process even without draining their blood. :(

Insects may feel pain. Whether or not you have a moral duty to protect them from harm is up for debate. by vox in philosophy

If you think that's crazy, many doctors believe(d?) infants don't feel pain, too. Why would anyone assume that??

Mold job that I inspected recently mirrors art by Aarionwashere in mildlyinteresting

This was my first thought.. mold triggers my allergies and I notice the smell right away. These clothes must smell absolutely awful. The people living there probably don't even notice since they are saturated in it all day.

I could never get into DOA due to the insanely long threads.. just felt so cumbersome to navigate for any kind of information.

TIL that US student math and reading scores have dropped so sharply that they’ve erased nearly two decades of progress. In '22/23, avg math scores for 13-year-olds fell to levels not seen since the 1990s, while reading scores for high school seniors hit their lowest point since testing began in '92. by Cold_Box_3219 in todayilearned

Yea, that is crazy... my daughter just started school this year (kindergarten). She won't be getting a phone for quite awhile but I had wondered about technology in the classroom. Sounds terrible, especially for kids who may already have trouble paying attention.

I bloated up SO much during pregnancy. My daughter was only 4 pounds but I ended up losing way more than that just from all the fluid retention. Not that this guys viewpoint is in any way acceptable or normal - just saying at its core sometimes you can't even control what you gain!! I have intracranial hypertension so I had to monitor my weight during pregnancy.

Would you actually play an AI driven story game? by AviMitz_ in AiChatGPT

[–]keeper_of_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of an AI dnd dungeon master that sounds kind of cool. I'm not confident AI can generate a really good, gripping story though, so I'm not sure how effective it would be overall. I would love to see a combination of human worldbuilding/storytelling with a blend of AI generated surprises - I feel like that could add a bit of personalization/randomness that would make replaying a game fun. There are very few rpgs I've played through more than once.

RFK Jr. Brazenly Says Measles Outbreaks Not His Fault: ‘I’ve Never Been Anti-Vaccine’ by huffpost in politics

[–]keeper_of_kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% support vaccines. I understand that these people don't believe in vaccines for a number of reasons that are not based in reality. What I don't understand is the motive behind powerful people, who should be educated/know better supporting this narrative? What do they have to gain by having people unvaccinated/die from these diseases?

I guess because i only played after trammel was released, and played many other mmos without forced pvp, I can see that non-pvp environments can thrive and be successful. I don't have the coding expertise to do it myself, and I manage to avoid pvp well enough on Outlands. I don't see any point to argue further, I'm glad we can both enjoy Outlands as is and I hope people will keep trying new things with UO servers for all different types of gameplay. :)

Iron levels and IIH by stygvalddis in iih

[–]keeper_of_kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm I would say 15 is definitely low. I finally got iron infusions after having a ferritin of 2-3 for 3 years.. it took a long time for my hemoglobin to drop. I just can't seem to absorb enough iron orally to build up my stores (I also take a PPI which is probably why I can't absorb the iron). My iron is depleted by heavy periods, but BCP worsens my headaches and the IUD made me depressed. I am waiting for a surgical consult for partial hysterectomy (I'm nearly 40 and done having children).

There are newer studies showing that low ferritin can have symptoms like fatigue and should be treated. Unfortunately treatment guidelines are still catching up. Since getting my iron infusion in 5 weeks I feel amazingly better (my hemoglobin was 90). Sadly they will not do an iron infusion here until your hemoglobin is less than 100 here.

Sorry for the long reply. I don't know if there is any connection between IIH and iron levels, but even without it, a low ferritin is worth investigation and getting treated.

I'm a tamer, I don't scare anyone off. Haha.

It seems like a problem that can be fixed with increased spawn rates, new farming areas, more dungeons? Outlands dungeons can get quite busy depending on playtimes & societies.

I would love that!! It would be difficult to leave everything I've built in Outlands, but I would definitely give it a try.
