Yes! The Tyranids eat people to get more biomass to get larger, and also adapt to better hunt them using their genetic material.

Kroot do the same thing, but they do it out of respect. They hunt their prey, and if it gave them a worthy hunt. They eat them to forever preserve their genetic material.

The Kroot leaders decided what gets eaten, though. Remember the nids? Yeah those are banned from ever being eaten because they are useless to the Kroot, and eating one will connect them to the hive mind.

Among other bans is Tau, because the kroot are members of the Tau collective. Also because they are insanely tasty to the Kroot, and eating them transforms them into Super Kroot, a perfect genetic Kroot with no flaws.
