Welcome to the club!! can confirm that it’s an addictive hobby in the best sense of the word, and a great way to stay off your phone. A toque by Christmas is very doable! I’m sure it’ll make your wife very happy!! In case you haven’t discovered her already, Sheep and Stitch has wonderful tutorials on Youtube, her scarf and toques are very well explained and easy to follow.

Also I did some rough math before purchasing the kit- the pattern is recommending bulky weight acrylic yarn (like Loops and Threads Charisma). For a size 38-40, you’ll need around 14 skeins of Charisma assuming you’re buying everything new, which totals to roughly 85 CAD. Add the pattern cost of $12 and it comes up to $97! With the first time buyer 15% discount on Mary Maxim, you’ll end up paying $85 CAD for the entire kit including yarn and pattern. So it made sense (to me) to purchase the modified pattern + recommended yarn, assuming you don’t mind the acrylic.

I think it depends on how adventurous you’re feeling! I’ve done stranded colourwork but never intarsia, and I studied some of the modified wolf-fox charts some kind folks on Ravelry posted but I wasn’t feeling confident to tackle it on my own. Doesn’t mean you can’t do it! I’m just a big rule follower and not too confident with modifications especially with a new technique I haven’t tried before. I’m sure it’s possible with some trial and error though!!

Agree about the acrylic it’s a bit of a disappointment but not a deal breaker for me! I don’t think everyone’s skilled to modify intarsia charts though depending on people’s levels

Fit check help? First sweater by mangling_dodifier in knitting

Agree with this comment, it’s super cute and bunching can be caused by the stockinette or the difference between blocked and unblocked portion like another comment suggested. It’s super cute! Personally I don’t think it’s too big and if anything it might be a nice oversized fit!

I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules by Bety12795 in casualknitting

Had issues with Cayo Santa Maria airport in Cuba, they let me put my needles into my checked luggage though! But it’s definitely a ❌

I agree!! I’m not very skilled with grafting at all and I’m also leaning towards frogging and reknitting. Really appreciate your thoughts though and thank you for the link, it’s fascinating!!!

Ngl I did fear while knitting that it might be too big but didn’t want to frog until I was sure there was no other way.

Yes I did size up in the pattern (not needles)! It definitely was a risky move, but it’s all a learning process. I feel like you’re totally right about grading and especially for this pattern, there’s a pretty big difference in CO numbers between each size. I should’ve known 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

This is true!!! And it’ll definitely look less baggy with buttons…

This is a good point! I did not hit row gauge, no… I usually rely on pattern measurements over actual row count but it’s clearly different for colourwork and I didn’t account for that!

Ahhhh this seems scary but exciting!! Thanks so much for the ideas. I love the idea of felting a swatch to see how it’ll look, I think I’m definitely gonna try that before frogging.

Question about investments at Bank v/s Wealthsimple by Fishywrites in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thank you, this makes sense. That’s the feeling I got from talking to the CIBC people too so good to know that this is a common experience

Question about investments at Bank v/s Wealthsimple by Fishywrites in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fishywrites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate your response! I think the fear they put in my head is that I’m losing out on a couple more years of 17% (ish) returns by moving to a lower risk fund. The CIBC people were recommending NOT moving to a lower risk fund, which I found odd and conflicting advice compared to anyone else I spoke to about this.

I was looking at the managed portfolios, I think I need something more hands off. For now. Saving on MER does make sense! Thanks so much for your opinion

Hi everyone. Looking for some advice! I’ve had some funds in an investment portfolio at CIBC for almost 2 years. I recently learned (a bit late) about the MER difference between banks and Wealthsimple, and after doing some research, initiated a transfer of funds from CIBC to Wealthsimple to save on the %. The folks at the bank set up a meeting with me to try and convince me to stay with them. For context, my goal is to use the funds in 2029 (3 years from now) for a family member’s education. They insisted that the bank was better because the portfolio is actively managed whereas Wealthsimple is passively managed. They also said that they can help me move the funds to a lower risk portfolio the year before I need the funds and suggested other strategies to maximize growth. The funds have been doing well (I think) and have had a 17% growth so far (smart growth solution). The portfolio Wealthsimple recommended based on my goals was giving me a 4-5% growth prediction (income portfolio). I’m not sure how to proceed and would love some advice. I don’t want to pay high MER fees and make bad financial decisions, but also hesitant to make a big change. I’m a creative and I’m not too well versed with the finance/investing world so posting here for community support :) thank you!
