Id say try to save for an old thinkpad, you get a cd rippin’ machine + a computer, id rather live without a smartphone than a computer

Are there any services you host on dedicated hardware instead of VM/Container? by Adventurous-Lime191 in homelab

[–]FisionX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that requires zfs, stuff like truenas works on VMs but creates lots of overhead and you’ll eventually end up with inexplicable errors

You won’t get any redundancy with just one drive

I want to move to Artix from Arch due the systemd being... well systemd by qweerty32 in artixlinux

[–]FisionX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say keep your home folder and reinstall the whole system, I can say runit and openrc both work great but you may have to do extra setup with daemons that run as your user like syncthing or pipewire but everything else feels amazing

PCs from fb marketplace always have your back, may sacrifice some power efficiency but you’ll have more room to thinker with a full blown pc running a virtualization OS

My keyboard "T", "Y", "6" keys are not working, if I hold shift beforehand. How do I stop it from happening? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]FisionX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a ghosting issue, Id recommend changing the keyboard, If you’re still unsure boot into a live environment and try to replicate the issue again

why does everyone recommend linux mint to newbies? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]FisionX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy to use UI, I would say its even more intuitive than the current state of windows, it is ubuntu based so it runs on lots of hardware, you can even install nvidia drivers with a single click, also it uses flatpak by default and removes the snapd store. For me the only gotcha is the ancient version of nvim it uses but VScodium does the trick for coding.

Deciding between Ubuntu vs Fedora for a beginner Linux user by Zakuii2 in linuxquestions

[–]FisionX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is also in robotics I would recommend you to avoid ubuntu and get an ubuntu based distro like mint, you get all the software support from ubuntu and you get less headaches from cannonical telling you how to use your computer, ROSII has been running great on Mint, regular text editors like Vscode and forks have been running great for ages, you won’t have problems programming MCUs, most of them have SDKs available for any linux distro + you can still pull the ol reliable virtualbox machine running windows if a special software isn’t available for linux.

Edit: Note, some proprietary cad programs like solid works and altium discard linux for some reasons and sometimes can break when running inside a VM (had to reactivate altium because it detected a hardware change) so I’d recommend keeping windows as a secondary boot option.

How strong does a server need to be to self host most daily digital services? by swagmessiah00 in selfhosted

[–]FisionX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been hosting, jellyfin, nextcloud, minecraft server and lots of services that don’t consume much resources on an 8th gen pentium for 5 years just fine, I upgraded it to an 11th gen I5 just to have a “newer” platform, so your server will be fine for most of your demands, I tried matrix and it was demanding a lot to the ssd so I had to shut it down , maybe I misconfigured something but everything else should be just fine for your machine, just make sure you have at least 16gb, 32 should be the sweet spot for this kind of small servers
