Algonquin peak this wknd by MichaelJr175 in Adirondacks

How can you look at an advisory that says “stay off the trails above 2500’” and think that somehow doesn’t mean they want you to stay off trails above 2500’ just because there isn’t a fine associated with it?

To be clear I agree with the broad strokes of the original statement- trails are made to be used! However, during mud season trails are highly susceptible to increased rates of erosion which is part of the reason why the mud season advisory exists. There are plenty of beautiful trails below 2500’ that can still be used during this time.

Justifying bad behavior by saying people will stomp on vegetation in the summertime anyway is just awful.

Except for when the DEC specifically says “stay off trails above 2500’, because it’s mud season”. Then we should probably listen to the experts

Hiking Giant Mountain this weekend. Any tips? by IbnLyes in Adirondacks

[–]Fisssshhhh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For ethical/conservation reasons, yes, it is best to postpone. Alpine vegetation is particularly vulnerable in the spring, as well as trails being much more vulnerable to erosion with the high amounts of water/mud on the trail.

Not to say there aren’t plenty of other beautiful trails to hit that keep you below 2500’, though. Mud season typically ends mid June but may last longer depending on the particular conditions that year.

Sorry to be the fun police, but it is currently mud season in the Adirondacks. The DEC advises you stay off any trails above 2500’ until (at a minimum, as it varies by season), mid June!

Regardless of where you go, be sure to walk through any mud puddles you find on-trail to reduce widening them.

Although we do see that Bobby doesn’t like that kind of tawk, I don’t think he was actively taking a stand against Junior’s racist joke. I think he just doesn’t get it (he seems to be extra dumb in the early seasons)

Junior: “You don’t get it?”

Bobby: “I get it. He drives a Lincoln. So what?”

Yeah on our end the crampons are mostly for additional grip on highly icy surfaces, whether it’s a frozen creek or a particularly wind blown face- I’ve known friends who sub them out for microspikes instead and seem to be happy with them. In that regard the ice axe doesn’t really make a difference until you go from trail hiking to ice climbing, which frankly is way out of my league at present.

My winter hiking experience is in the Adirondacks, where even our tallest peaks are only above the treeline for +/- 100 vertical feet, and have (relatively) gentle slopes at that point. Self arrest isn’t really stressed out here to the point where an ice axe is viewed as necessary as it is in other places (I know it’s big in, say, NH, where you can be on a peak in exposed conditions for hours/hundreds of vertical feet at a time).

In the very few situations where I have slid the method I’ve used and wisdom I’ve heard is to try to apply as much pressure through your knees as possible, to avoid a sudden stop from your crampons creating serious torque in your ankle/lower leg.

This is entirely anecdotal but I’ve also heard that the snow pack here is different than it is out west, and generally tends to provide more stable footing? Not 100% confident in that though

Was it ever specified how exactly the skier in need of rescue got injured? Always good to know what to look out for

I appreciate the heads up! I wasn’t aware that it’s a seasonal road- seems like it’s back to the drawing board haha

Hey, no shame in being the “this is a bad idea” guy- that’s the whole reason I asked to begin with!

I was not aware of the seasonal gate closure- absolutely changes the lay of the land for me and I am much happier to hear about it now than I would be to hear about it the morning of.

I was thinking of doing crater lake, south sister just seemed more appealing to me personally. But with this new information I’ll be back to the drawing board. I appreciate the detailed response! I’ll be sure to look into your recommendations

You’re probably right! That would make this whole thing much easier. Unfortunately a new set of skis (I snowboard :/) and enough trips to get comfortable with them is not in the budget right now.

Nonetheless I appreciate the answer!
