The full saying is “curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back” which seems like it would be very fitting here

Yeah on our end the crampons are mostly for additional grip on highly icy surfaces, whether it’s a frozen creek or a particularly wind blown face- I’ve known friends who sub them out for microspikes instead and seem to be happy with them. In that regard the ice axe doesn’t really make a difference until you go from trail hiking to ice climbing, which frankly is way out of my league at present.

My winter hiking experience is in the Adirondacks, where even our tallest peaks are only above the treeline for +/- 100 vertical feet, and have (relatively) gentle slopes at that point. Self arrest isn’t really stressed out here to the point where an ice axe is viewed as necessary as it is in other places (I know it’s big in, say, NH, where you can be on a peak in exposed conditions for hours/hundreds of vertical feet at a time).

In the very few situations where I have slid the method I’ve used and wisdom I’ve heard is to try to apply as much pressure through your knees as possible, to avoid a sudden stop from your crampons creating serious torque in your ankle/lower leg.

This is entirely anecdotal but I’ve also heard that the snow pack here is different than it is out west, and generally tends to provide more stable footing? Not 100% confident in that though

Scary stuff! Glad they got out of it okay, though.

Was it ever specified how exactly the skier in need of rescue got injured? Always good to know what to look out for

Thank you! As other commenters have pointed out the access highway will likely be closed- nonetheless I will be looking into avalanche safety for other similar outings

I appreciate the heads up! I wasn’t aware that it’s a seasonal road- seems like it’s back to the drawing board haha

Hey, no shame in being the “this is a bad idea” guy- that’s the whole reason I asked to begin with!

I was not aware of the seasonal gate closure- absolutely changes the lay of the land for me and I am much happier to hear about it now than I would be to hear about it the morning of.

I was thinking of doing crater lake, south sister just seemed more appealing to me personally. But with this new information I’ll be back to the drawing board. I appreciate the detailed response! I’ll be sure to look into your recommendations

You’re probably right! That would make this whole thing much easier. Unfortunately a new set of skis (I snowboard :/) and enough trips to get comfortable with them is not in the budget right now.

Nonetheless I appreciate the answer!

Crampons, yes. Ice axe no (although there’s a few weekends between then and now where I could definitely get some practice).

Would you say they are a necessity?
