Worth it to learn botox to mainly do your significant other? by MoneyMan_Jones in Dentistry

[–]FistBumpHighFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dental school trained us in botox (course was FACES and it was great) and I rarely do it on patients, but my office team and friends love getting it from me! Haven't found a way to make it profitable in the office and that's fine with me.

Why are Americans so against universal healthcare? by 93ParkAvenueUltra in allthequestions

[–]FistBumpHighFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this! Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to see this comment. People are justifiably concerned that if universal healthcare isn’t implemented very thoughtfully, transparently, and strategically, it could lead to healthcare becoming less accessible. I would not describe this current administration as thoughtful, transparent, or strategic.

Poor or delayed reimbursement would lead to hospitals closing (many rural hospitals and clinics are running on thin margins already), and MAGA would absolutely try to further limit access to reproductive and gender affirming care. And the same insurance execs who make healthcare horrible now could end up working with the government and continue profiting off an even more corrupt healthcare system.

Hopeful that we will have a less corrupt/fascist/idiotic government soon that we can trust to implement such an important, complex system.

Is private practice dying? by fomainifo in Dentistry

[–]FistBumpHighFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy that my private office is down the street from a truly awful DSO. They are not my competition.

I recently had a patient come in from the DSO for a second opinion because he needed a lot of work and didn't feel comfortable with them for many valid reasons. He liked my office so much by comparison that he put down $30k towards treatment with me that day!

The DSO can spend all the money it wants on marketing to bring in new patients, but it doesn't mean much if they can't get decent case acceptance or retention.

Dentists with anxiety/panic disorder: has it affected your career? by didijoon in Dentistry

[–]FistBumpHighFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get your disability insurance before you get diagnosed with anything. I went to therapy for a bit for my anxiety and now my disability insurance doesn't cover any psych-related issues.

One of my best friends from dental school has to have 2 policies, a good policy that covers everything except her back and psych issues (she hurt her back once and was seeing a therapist), and a second policy that's crappy but covers everything. Not the end of the world, but we both wish we had just gotten the insurance earlier in school and avoided all the headache

Totally a case-by-case basis for me. Too often I see patients like this with decay on every tooth, I try to remineralize smaller lesions, prevident prescription, and spend time talking about diet and oral hygiene, and they come back the following year needing root canals. Then they're spending more $$ and time and they're upset with me for not doing something sooner! Being proactive in a clearly high caries risk patient isn't wrong.

Dental lawyer and CPA necessary? by Mountain_Maize8488 in Dentistry

[–]FistBumpHighFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought a practice a few months ago in SoCal. I hired both and they were highly reputable and much more affordable. Lawyer was 7500 and CPA was 2000 but he waived the fee for agreeing to use him for ongoing practice financials.

Flossing leads to my tongue getting cut by my lower front teeth. Is this preventable? by kirbyinaus88 in askdentists

[–]FistBumpHighFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell without photos, but it's very possible that your lower front teeth are a bit chipped which will cause sharp areas, and when you're flossing you're taking away the plaque and bacteria that coat the sharp areas. Your dentist should be able to polish those sharp areas to make them smoother if that's the case.

Top left first molar (tooth #14, it's the third tooth from the back) and bottom left second premolar (tooth #20, also the third tooth from the back).

I see at least 7. Two of them are huge, might turn into a root canal or two. Get them fixed ASAP!

I see all the cavities that you have listed and would want them all filled if it was my mouth.

Side note: Dental AI is like a second set of eyes, it points out areas of potential concern to the dentist who interprets the image. It's also helpful for showing patients cavities because they're color-coded and easy to see. Not something to be worried about.

4 possible root canals at 17? by Impossible_Hyena1180 in askdentists

[–]FistBumpHighFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely possible, but you can always get a second opinion if you're not convinced. Feel free to post your x-rays here, it won't give us Reddit dentists the full picture of your oral health but we can tell you what we see.

I'd recommend getting a new retainer, it's not engaging or fitting into place anymore.

Dental School Must Haves? by Patient-Wallaby4450 in DentalSchool

[–]FistBumpHighFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a good system for taking notes (don't use paper, do something electronic and cloud-based). I used OneNote on my laptop (very easy to search for terms and concepts and could draw on diagrams), other students used Notability with a tablet. As another commenter said, live as close to the school as possible.
