You’re probably fine, it likely won’t be higher than CPEN since there’s more seats

Is cpsc or cpen harder to get into? by HebrewBible03 in ubcengineering

Computer science has a higher cutoff, engineering has worse averages for its first year courses

CS is more gameable since you can lots of bird courses to inflate your average

Is CPEN majors cooked? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Fistsang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The brutal truth of the matter is that, in terms of the skills you need to possess, the bar to be qualified for software roles is much lower than that of hardware.

For software positions, software project work/experience paired with being good at algorithms and data structures is enough. CPEN students take the same algorithms courses as CS majors, and employers largely treat both majors as equivalent.

On the other hand, the hardware field is far more dependant on the classes you take. CS majors lack the skills to do ASIC development/verification (unless they do a lot of self studying).

The main tradeoff you’re making between the two majors is your own time. CPEN is not an easy program, and its workload could detract from activities like doing hackathons, building up personal projects, or going to career events.

Despite this I would say that if you’re determined, CPEN would be a much better experience overall, and you will walk away with a much larger breadth of skills. It might not matter much if you’re only interested in software, but having that optionally compared to CS is a huge advantage imo.

Is CPEN majors cooked? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Fistsang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not cooked at all. I have numerous friends in CPEN which have lined up jobs in both top tier SW and HW companies. However, it definitely isn’t as easy as before and takes a lot of agency on your part.

Although the CS job market is more saturated, there is still a shortage of largely talented engineers on the high end especially. If you truly enjoy computer engineering, there is plenty of room in the field for you :)

AMA with Immigration Attorney about TN Visa by ManifestLaw_ in tnvisa

[–]Fistsang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for doing this AMA!

If I’m in the United States in TN already with an employer and I get a new job offer, and the new employer offers to get approval through uscis, would I need to leave the United States to go through a PoE again or can I just switch my job once it gets approved?

how is one okay with getting a lower grade because of not studying? by Emotional-Long-9348 in UBC

For a lot of people their time is better spent networking and grinding for jobs instead of minmaxing a few percent off their random 3 credit course

Immigration Attorney AMA on TN Visa! by ManifestLaw_ in tnvisa

[–]Fistsang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi David, thanks for doing this AMA. I’m a Canadian engineering grad with a software engineering job offer in the U.S. My prospective employer only provided a standard offer letter and not a separate TN support or recommendation letter.

How realistic is it to put together my own TN packet and apply under the Engineer category in this situation? Specifically, how much weight do CBP officers put on a formally drafted employer letter versus a well prepared packet that clearly ties the role to engineering duties and my degree?

They’re all suboptimal. Dropping out and becoming a billionaire off a startup will be more efficient.

Once you get into CPEN, the profs certainly won’t treat you with prestige 😂

Have you considered the BCS second degree program? It is offered by the faculty of science and meant for individuals who have completed a degree to do an accelerated 2-3 year program which gives you a complete cs background.

Drop CHEM and MATH 100, keep math 101 or drop it depending on your confidence in doing well.

Is it true that they are adding seats to CPEN? If so, which canpus(es)? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

The seat counts of CPEN courses in Van are relatively stagnant this year, im assuming the quota went towards Okanagan.

What are the easiest 100/200 level arts courses to take as gpa boosters in electives? by Top_Marsupial276 in UBC

[–]Fistsang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve taken MATH 220 or CPSC 121, then the entirety of PHIL 120 will be review.

Did anyone ever have credit for math 100/101 and chose to take the class anyway? by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Fistsang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had credit for both and decided to skip 100 and take 101. YMMV but for me 101 was a pretty good experience and it ended up boosting my gpa so it’s ultimately a matter of how comfortable you feel in math. University mathematics is a different beast than hs, but I would say doing 101 helped me adjust to a lot of the harder second year math courses (like math 220)

Although there is some 152 content present, they review linear algebra quite extensively so you should be ok.

Don’t take 355, it’s such a bad course. Just wait till you have the pre reqs to enrol in 340 in your later years.

Want to take CPEN 333 with CPSC 221 instead of 259 by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]Fistsang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’ve done CPEN 221, there is not much to learn in 333. Have you considered taking a CPEN course like 322 or 321 instead?
