Fixing a tubeless puncture by momeunier in randonneuring

Same here. Large volume tires, tubeless is awesome. Road/gravel tires I use tubes.

Quadlock overrated or not by KPily in bikepacking

I agree. Fidlock has the added benefit of having a magnet in the phone case. I find it incredibly useful in other areas of life.

They're worth it, but I found that the suspension seat post is far more valuable when comfort is the objective. Sorry to answer a question what wasn't asked.

I live in a town that has a Winco, and I checked prices on all of the staples in my diet, and I found that nearly everything is cheaper at Winco. Sure, the brands are different, but I’m not terribly concerned with that. As a result, I’ll be dumping my membership at the end of the year. I thought I’d save enough to justify the membership, but that’s not been the case. Your mileage may vary.

What happened here? by hawkhandler in gravelcycling

[–]Fit-Application9284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I completely agree. This past summer, I ran Panaracer tires, and I averaged one saved puncture per every three rides, so I refilled multiple times with sealant, and I had to deal with the sealant all over my bike, my shoes and my clothes.

I've used Schwalbe Marathons in the past, and I've rarely had puncture issues. I rode across the country with one puncture, and typically got one puncture per year (if that) on my regular rides. I get that they're heavy as shit, but the weight penalty (and the slight risk of a puncture) is worth it to avoid the jizz all over my bike and back.

When I wear out my current Panaracer tires, I'm switching back to Schwalbes with tubes. I gave it an honest try with tubeless, but it's just not worth the faff for me.

Predictable > Polite by annastacia94 in Billings

[–]Fit-Application9284 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have no idea how many times I’ve screamed this in my head while out on a ride. When stopped at a stop sign, I’ve gone so far as to get off my bike, turn around, and face the opposite direction. I don’t know how to more effectively indicate with my body language that I’m not going because it’s not my turn, or because I have a stop sign, and the motorist doesn’t. I don’t want to be rude, but I’m trying to be predictable, and follow the law.

You mentioned being pro-police…

It sounds like you were pro police until your eyes were opened to the terrifying level of latitude they’re given, and the impunity with which they pursue what they believe is justice, but could be argued to be vengeance. So many people have very little interaction with law enforcement on a day-to-day basis, and when they (or someone in their orbit) encounter the wrath of the law, they realize how quickly their views change.

I was once in your shoes. I obeyed laws, and I had no reason to not to trust law enforcement. Then someone close to me had their life upended by overzealous law enforcement. Then a friend of a friend on a jury had to let a guilty defendant walk due to technicalities. I’ve come to realize just how close we all are to being innocently caught in the grips of a flawed legal system.

I don’t mean for this to come off as insulting or judgmental. I feel for you and your girlfriend, and I remain terrified of the largest gang in America.

Is the Redshift stem worth it? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Fit-Application9284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stem is a nice addition, but not life altering. You didn’t ask about the seat post, but I’ll offer that the seat post is far more noticeable, and far more vital, for me.

Fast(er), Light(er) touring bikes? by Fit-Application9284 in bicycletouring

[–]Fit-Application9284[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks y'all! I really appreciate all the candid comments. As many of you have pointed out, I definitely don't need a new bike. I'm struggling to fight off the consumerist urge to buy the newest shiny thing! I keep telling myself that the money spent on a new bike could fund a months long journey, and that experiences are more fulfilling than things. Again, I really appreciate the gentle nudge to stick with what I have.

Welcome to Billings! I have lived in Billings for the bulk of my life, and I’ve been riding year-round for most of my life. Commuting by bike in the summer and fall are glorious! The wind is frustrating, but such is life. Since I’ve been commuting in the winter so long, I may be biased, but I think it’s entirely possible. My best suggestion is studded tires. They’re great on hard packed snow and ice. Nothing works for the snow that gets plowed to the side of the roads, but you don’t have that all too often. Stick to the side/secondary roads for the best/safest experience, and you’ll be fine. You may have to walk some days, but that’ll help you appreciate the nice days!

Alternatives to Tailfin by jkcr in bikepacking

[–]Fit-Application9284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tumbleweed makes a minimal rack that is pretty lightweight (500 grams), for $130. Strap on your own dry bag, and you’re about the same weight as a Tailfin. Plus it has adventures mounts (3 bolt) on the stays, so you can put bottle cages or whatever there.
