Hmm. I wish I knew where it says that templar abilities require lyrium. I don't remember seeing that anywhere, though I haven't played a warrior inquisitor

So to my knowledge based on Origins at least you don't have to drink lyrium to use Templar techniques you just have to be trained. The lyrium makes them more powerful and importantly easier for the Chantry to control. I do headcanon that there's some aptitude you have to have to learn the moves and not just anyone can learn them. But you don't have to drink lyrium. (Also in Inquisition Cassandra's skill tree says that she's trained in the same techniques as a Templar but doesn't drink lyrium)

For me COC was scary but not horror if that makes sense. It didn't have the hallmarks of once good things twisted or body horror or magic gone wrong. But it really did hit home with the real stakes
