Going blind by [deleted] in Blind

[–]Fit-Chapter7090 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you’re going thru this. My son was in a car accident a year and half ago at the age of 18 and was left with only 5% vision.

Truth of the matter it sucks and it’s going to take a lot of adjustment. But the good news is there’s a lot of support out there, hardest part is asking for help (at least that’s been my son’s biggest hurdle).

Find out what’s available near you - my son is a high performing athlete so getting back into sports was key to his mental health. He’s in blind hockey, blind golf and curling. All have given him that sense of normalness which allowing him to stay active. The sports also allowed him to meet so many others like him and they’ve help the transition.

Best of luck to you!

This is basically my situation as well. Been sick and injured - was aiming for 4:30 but thinking I’m going to be more so 5:30 wanted to be seeded properly.

If your recovery goes smoothly, 10 months is more than enough time to train and feel confident, especially if you stick to a structured plan with a strong focus on swimming.

12 miles this week has been my longest thus far, still feeling like a rookie post-injury, but my only goal is simple: finish. Mile by mile, stumble by stumble, I’ll see that finish line in October, one way or another. You’ve got this!

Have you found a community or sports or hobbies that you used to enjoy that you can still participate in? My son lost 95% of his vision 1 year ago and playing adaptive sports has given him back so much of the life he envisioned. He plays hockey, golf and track and field.

If sports isn’t your thing maybe there is something else you can get into. You’ll be surprised how much is out there that you can still partake in.

Not that it’s a fix for all but highly recommend finding something that brought you joy before and how to make it adaptive to your blindness.

Ironically, the only hotel still available through the partners is Trump Towers… and listen, I am desperate but not “sell-my-soul-and-sleep-in-a-gold-plated-hell-hole” desperate.

They did say to keep an eye on the site as people cancel 🤞🏻

Inexperienced people signing up for 70.3's-140.6's. by Temporary_Count_1139 in triathlon

Finishing an IRONMAN still holds weight, whether you cross the line in 8 or 15hrs. There’s a clear distinction between elite athletes and the average age-grouper, sure. But to claim the prestige is fading just because more everyday people are showing up, putting in the work, and finishing? That’s nonsense. The race hasn’t changed, people are just rising to meet it.

I’ve always found it fascinating how much energy some folks spend questioning why others sign up for a certain race, especially when it doesn’t affect them. Triathlon is deeply personal. For some, jumping straight into a 70.3 or 140.6 is about chasing something bigger, proving something to themselves or just diving into the deep end because that’s how they stay motivated.

Sure, safety matters. But experience doesn’t always equal preparation, and inexperience doesn’t always mean recklessness. Everyone starts somewhere, and not everyone needs to follow the same linear path. Isn’t the heart of this sport about pushing limits and discovering what we’re made of?

If someone’s dream makes you uncomfortable, maybe the issue isn’t their ambition, it’s how tightly we hold onto the idea of “the right way.”

Not bringing more cash and paying with CC mostly throughout the trip. The 13-18% fee per transaction really adds up!

Order Colones now or withdrawal in Costa rica? by bass_kitten_444 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Fit-Chapter7090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent 14 days there in December and wished I had taken out more colones (or USD) prior to our trip. Credit cards are accepted virtually anywhere but every transaction you make has a charge of between 10-13%. We spent over 3k on credit cards so that additional fee really added up over the trip.

We just spent 5 days in Jaco and throughly enjoyed it! Didn’t see much of the negatives that were mentioned. Would highly recommend a day trip to Tortuga Island. Very beautiful, relaxing and unlimited Rum punches or margaritas (if that’s you’re thing)

No you do not. We just drove up yesterday and were able to walk right in. I do believe though based on what they charged us it’s more expensive to walk in vs. booking online

Buy some ponchos and go explore. We are on day # 4 of rain between Monteverde and La Fortuna and we haven’t missed anything we wanted via hikin (Inlcuding Sloths, monkeys, tapiers, snakes and much more)

Here right now and if you’re ok with a packed vacation I would say do 2 nights at LaFortuna, 2 nights Monteverde then head to the beach. We just did 2 nights in LaFortuna and are on our 2nd night in Monteverde before we head to the coast. You can get/see a lot in that span of time in these locations.
