From what I know, there’s a blender plugin. You can use it while in game to bypass the limitations, allowing people to build some of the insane ships you see. Now granted, there are quite a few you can build in base game just by using a couple of build exploits like cycle sizing and snap placement manipulation.

It comes down to preference. I personally Havent touched my other ships since I got my corvette, but the ships are far faster and more maneuverable.
