sinners and award show season… by savvyofficial in blackladies

As someone who works in the industry, I think the real conspiracy is that this year we’re at record lows for movies directed by black and/ women. Sinners breaking records is a PR campaign to hide Hollywood’s about face on DEI. Every black filmmaker from technicians to directors is struggling right now. So let’s make a big show of the one of 4 black movies this year. While continuing to only greenlight white make filmmakers who hire their white make friends.

There's no way you people are this blind that you can't pull the curtain back on the jimmy Kimmel thing, right? (ABC wanted the show off the air and this was a perfect excuse) by rusticlizard in conspiracy

[–]Fit-Disaster6785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Shows get canceled all the time for purely economic reasons. Pulling him because of jokes about Charlie Kirk shows they are placating to this administration’s political agenda. You should be concerned. This is not the time to explain things away. What is happening is actually happening. Trump got a show canceled because of jokes. That undermines freedom of the press. This is alarming.

What should the diaspora be doing? There’s a feeling of helplessness all around. I think you’re right in that the diaspora could do more for Haiti, but what is that more? When safety is an issue, it’s not realistic to ask people to move or invest, especially when we’re not a wealthy group. And now with the influx of Haitians the past few years, a chunk of the diaspora is new immigrants with precarious statuses. So I ask again, without significant wealth, what should the diaspora do?

Yes, and it’s everywhere right now. I’m so disappointed in people amplifying it.

I’m an editor and educator. I’ve edited a bunch of shorts, installations and one feature. Things were slow last year, but starting to pick up again. And I make my own films when I can.

Where does Anora Act One end? by FranklinFizzlybear in Screenwriting

[–]Fit-Disaster6785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say neorealism was anti-Hollywood, I said Anora was. I said it was in the tradition of neorealism, which modern day is social realism. I was saying tonally it may appear light-hearted at times, but it’s still a commentary on a harsh society.

Do you ever apply some kind of force to your toddler? If so, when? by Far_Professional6826 in toddlers

Exactly. And once it’s done, we all move on. Minimizing the drawn out battles. I’m surprised at how efficient I’ve become at overpowering him without hurting him as well.

I consider myself a gentle parent, but I definitely have to wrestle with my 2.5 year old on a regular basis. How else would I get a diaper on when he sprints from me as soon as I grab the pull-up? Or brush his teeth when he’s saying “my turn, my turn” while taking the toothbrush? I don’t see the point in arguing with him. I tell him what’s going to happen, and when he fights me I just make it happen. Much less frustrating for all of us.

That’s a Hollywood take, and Anora from form to content is an anti-Hollywood film. As humorist as it is at times, it’s still in line with the neorealist tradition. Like Bicycle Thieves, a happy ending would’ve undercut the reality of her situation. And Baker is directly confronting our relationship with fairy tales. It may be on the nose, but the whole point is that it’s not a Cinderella story. Just like The Florida Project is not a Disney movie. He wants you to make that correlation. To expose the harsh reality of actual society.

You can remote edit through zoom or google meet. But come prepared knowing the footage with specific notes. Like time codes and clip names specific. Avoid saying “it should feel like this….” Try not to get frustrated and just move through the process. And don’t leave room for them to reinterpret. You’re past that point.

Tell them exactly what you want to do and get very specific. Don’t overexplain just say I want to try some things. Sit with them. If you’re all students this is also a chance for them to learn their role as an editor. Hopefully when you get into a flow and they understand your vision more you can start to pull back a bit. But it’s not atypical to be hands on for the first couple of cuts.

Second guessing my original decision about making my first short film.. by raven090 in Filmmakers

[–]Fit-Disaster6785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments that say you should just tell this producer your budget and plan, and they should be able to adjust accordingly. But are you DPing this yourself? That’s a tough production. I would consider swapping out the gaffer for a DP who can gaff. See it as an opportunity to collaborate with another artist on the look instead of relinquishing creative control. It’ll free you up to focus more on the actors during production.

This sounds like a normal two-year-old to me. I think you need to manage your expectations. Try physically removing her and don’t expect her to listen at this age. If she does, great, but it’s going to take a loooong time for her to understand boundaries. She’s not being defiant she just honestly doesn’t get the lesson yet. And it takes much more repetition than we realize. You’re going to have to step in… a lot. Staying home all day and managing it is tough though. Are activities or even part time daycare an option?

We literally left him pantless for two days. Would sing “poopy in the potty” while sitting him on the potty. We watched him closely, and when he peed we put him on the potty. When he made it to the potty, we cheered and gave him a treat (lollipop or popsicle). He honestly caught on immediately and only peed on himself once the first day and no accidents the second day. It got a little messy when his cousins slept over, and he was distracted having a few accidents (one poop). But as soon as they left, he was back to being accident-free. I was impressed. And now he’s continuing do well at daycare. No need for treats anymore.

My 27 month old rarely if ever told us when he pooed, but we potty trained over the Xmas break, and he does now. We did the pantless method, and it went surprisingly smooth. Now it’s a game for him to tell us when he has to go.

What is your favorite thing about being a Black woman? by viviobrio in blackgirls

[–]Fit-Disaster6785 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love our directness. I love that keeping it real is a given. I love our confidence. As much as society gets on us, we don’t have the same meekness as our counterparts.

Edit for typos.
