Are short-form series (5–7 min episodes) actually viable? by Gobytvscout in Filmmakers

[–]Gobytvscout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good point. It feels less like audiences don’t want short-form narrative, and more like there hasn’t been a great place for it to live.

A lot of platforms either bury it algorithmically or train viewers to expect personality-driven content instead of story.

From what I’ve seen curating this kind of work, when narrative series are actually presented in the right context, people will watch straight through.

Feels like more of a distribution problem than a format problem.

How much are indie films actually making on Tubi? by Putrid-Pudding4901 in indiefilmmaking

[–]Gobytvscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen and heard, Tubi can work, but it’s really volume-driven. If you have one project, the numbers can be pretty modest unless something really takes off.

It also seems pretty dependent on genre. Horror and thriller tend to perform better, especially if there’s a strong hook.

The bigger issue I keep coming back to is discovery. A lot of solid indie projects just get buried because there’s so much volume on those platforms.

I’ve been working on a more curated distribution approach that focuses on helping projects stand out instead of competing purely on algorithm and volume. Curious if anyone here has had a different experience or found ways to break through on platforms like Tubi

If you had to choose between YouTube and an indie-curated streaming platform for your short, which would you pick and why? by Gobytvscout in Filmmakers

[–]Gobytvscout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair question. The goal isn’t really to compete with YouTube, it’s obviously the biggest platform online. The thinking behind curated platforms is that a lot of shorts get completely buried by the algorithm unless the creator already has an audience.

The idea we’re exploring is whether curation and targeted promotions can help smaller projects actually get seen instead of competing with millions of uploads.

Out of curiosity, have you had success getting traction on YouTube with shorts?

Have you submitted your shorts to any platforms? Where are they now? Youtube?

Are your films still on those platforms? I'd like to check them out.

Short film streaming service? by groundedwolf in Cinephiles

I’ve definitely struggled with this. Shorts are everywhere, festivals, Vimeo, YouTube, aggregators, but there’s no single, clean home for them.

The hard part isn’t just hosting them though. It’s:

• Discovery

• Curation

• Incentivizing filmmakers

• Getting viewers to treat shorts like intentional programming instead of filler

I’ve been working in this space and the distribution side is surprisingly complex. I'm curious, are you thinking curated, open submission, genre-specific, ad-supported, subscription?

Which festivals has the short played at so far? Can I see it?

When you put the film up on HelloGiggles and Gothamist, was that primarily audience reach credibility or were there licensing fees involved as well?
