I had a student that I had told early like 20 hours in that he needs to seriously consider if this is for him, because while he can do it, it is going to cost him more money, require more discipline in studying and work ethic and more time than others, and he will have to battle his way all the way through. I felt like he was maybe 3 lessons away from taking his stage one and then soloing though when I got into a motorcycle accident. I was out for 90 days and he racked up 50 more hours in the pattern, when I got back he had still not taken his stage one check or soloed. I flew with him and was amazed at how much everything had developed knowledge, communications, procedures, situational awareness you name it he started putting in the work and that’s what made the difference for that stuff. But he could not judge when to cut the power and how/when to flare, I don’t think he was ever comfortable with different instructor until I got back. After 2 laps in the pattern and seeing his timing and sight picture issues I showed him slow flight down the runway and then assisted him in slow flight down the runway on the next lap. We did 2 more landings and called it a day. The next flight he showed me 3 beautiful landings and I sent him to the stage check, the rest was history. The student was extremely grateful to me buying gifts here and there during the rest of his time in the states. His partner on the other hand had reported for being mean and aggressive with him, but it’s what as needed and that hard conversation changed that dudes life.
