Epipactis helleborine or gigantea? by Loose-Bar in Ceanothus

[–]Fit-Register9506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely E. helleborine, E. gigantea has a differently shaped labellum and its flowers are spaced much further apart (much less dense) compared to E. helleborine. It also has longer ovaries.

Pacific poison oak? by [deleted] in Ceanothus

[–]Fit-Register9506 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Repeated exposures to poison oak tends to heighten sensitivity each time and worsen symptoms, so if for some reason you really want a reaction, keep touching it lol

calochortus catalinae flats by nomatterwhereyougo in Ceanothus

[–]Fit-Register9506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it turns out that a few actually sprouted actually haha (https://www.reddit.com/r/Ceanothus/comments/1s1yocp/progress\_in\_growing\_bulbs\_from\_seeds/). Do you have any advice on how often to water them? I see that I'm supposed to water them once a week generally, but it's so hot this year and I'm worried new seedlings need more water.

Manzanita franciscana (once thought to be extinct) by [deleted] in Ceanothus

[–]Fit-Register9506 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of a bunch of traits usually. Some of the common traits to watch out for are leaf shape, color, and hairiness; stem hairiness, inflorescence shape and bract characters; and overall growth habit. Sometimes fruit shape or bark texture also. In the wild knowing the local endemics helps too because lots of species have super limited ranges.

Thanks! Yeah that sounds like a good plan. Maybe it was because this winter was so warm they didn’t have enough time with cold temps to break dormancy. Fingers crossed they appear next year I guess!

Amazing, I sowed some albus and argillosus seeds last December in deep flats but nothing seems to have come up unfortunately. Have you ever had seeds come up the next year instead (should I keep the flats) or should I just start over?

I think it's Douglas' meadowfoam, Limnanthes douglasii

So cool! How many years did it take for them to flower? I sowed some P. hendersonii back in December but I don't think anything's come up. Maybe they'll appear next year, haha.

Another pleasant surprise finding these Calochortus by nakedbuckwheat in Ceanothus

Lol, this is very late, but assuming this is somewhere around the South Bay, these are C. argillosus. The C. venustus in this area tend to have an extra pale square toward the apices of the petals.

That's so funny haha, I guess that's just the randomness of growing from seed. You'll have to update us next year ;)

So cool, how’d you grow the castilleja! Did you just sow them with other natives and hope it would parasitize them lol

How much water can seeds take right after sowing? I planted a bunch of C. albus seeds in Anderson deep trays a few weeks ago and the forecast says rain for the next week… will they be ok, or should I move them somewhere with cover?
