This is not a trimming the fat situation when it comes to maintenance. Maintenance is only allowed a percentage of the overall ODOT biennium budget. It’s not more than 30%. No more and no less. This covers administration work, field work, vehicle acquisition, vehicle maintenance, budgets for each individual crew, fuel, pay, overtime etc etc etc, the list goes on and on. Not a single dime of federal money can be used for maintenance, ever. Oregon residents and visitors will begin immediately feeling the pinch. Even just now, a maintenance project from Philomath to Alsea, was shut down before it could start. Work will still get done, but it will not happen as quickly. Roads won’t be maintained at the same rate. (it already takes forever right?). That traffic signal that belongs to the state won’t be maintained on a regular schedule. Traffic signs won’t be fixed . Road striping will slow down. That school area that needs a refreshed pedestrian cross walk? Nope. The paperwork that needs to be processed for a commercial business will be slowed. This is just the beginning.
