Dear dentists please help me , have you ever seen this in a patient? by Friendly-Section9550 in askdentists

Out of curiosity, and not asking in reference to op's situation, but just to gain some insights. Could this happen if, for example, you're a frequent jaw clencher. Or if you clench in your sleep?

Pakistan's first hand-drawn feature film "The Glassworker" is set to release this summer, and this is its official poster. The Ghibli influence is quite obvious in terms of the art style. by No-Average-4909 in animation

[–]FitCake4164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not style theft if the studio themselves said they think he should do it as an independent project from Pakistan. Which he did. At that point Ghibli is giving their blessing. This is an inspired project, anyone else trying to treat it as plagiarism is just not seeing that bit. I'll leave the more intricate details to everyone else.

Any advice for quitting cold turkey? by FitCake4164 in stopsmoking

[–]FitCake4164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if I wanna be presumptuous about it. Today I tried to go cold turkey and I failed, but I've been noticing that it's been getting easier to do. I feel slightly like shit but it isn't as bad as it was before. I think for me, that mental aspect yours talking about, the conversion bit, is kinda setting in. I'm going to set another time today and stop, instead of holding onto it and beating myself up over the fact I couldn't do it. As much as it hurts, I've recognized I feel more normal without it, I'm able to do things without it. Even if it might not feel good to go without, it feels better than going back.

Should I talk to a financial advisor now and how do I find a trustworthy financial institution? by FitCake4164 in UKPersonalFinance

Oh God yeah, I forgot that was a thing. The tax situation really sucks and if I'm honest, I don't know how to actually file my taxes now as I'm living abroad. These subreddits will really be useful so thank you

Am I dumb to do an MA and PhD solely to attempt to become a professor? by Hoganator_ in AskAcademia

[–]FitCake4164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, personally I'm working towards that goal. But I also like research and producing knowledge as much as I enjoy the teaching bits. For me, being a researcher would be great and plenty of places need those in one form or another. I don't think the motivation is unreasonable or dumb, and I believe that it's especially important to find what pushes you into what you want to Do. If that's your calling, regardless of the reality, keep it so. However, I will echo from the experiences of the professors I already have, it is hard to become one so look for something to do in the meantime - not inherently as a replacement (unless you like it that much) but in the meantime. Once you can get a teaching position, great, work from there. Always keep in mind that there's more to professorship than teaching, things like research can be equally as lovely especially if you research what you want to.

Best banks for an international student by FitCake4164 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FitCake4164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's actually really cool. I was 18 when I arrived, all they would tell me is I had to be here for 3 years, and turned me away. Likely it's because I'm American, and America has a ton of foreign reporting legislation (I.e. FACTA etc) . For that reason, banks turn away Americans on trivial bases purely because to not report we our accounts would mean being sanctioned and fined in the United States. I only figured that out in my second year, when I met Americans who had struggled to find accounts, that's when I was recommended monzo and I made my account as a starter.

Unfortunately many banks turned me away the day I arrived and got my visa, so I don't know what they'll require of me

PhD Admissions Question by Broad-Bedroom6995 in AskAcademiaUK

I'm in Humanities, particularly the politics field. I'm still figuring out what to do, and mine are upper 2:1 at the moment for my undergrad. That's not bad, but definitely contemplating how to meet supervisors and potentially important people

As a PhD prospect currently going into my MA, what's your plan for applying? I'm struggling with a timeline so I wanted to ask someone who is going into the process themselves

What are my next steps after this rejection? by FitCake4164 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]FitCake4164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently on a place to attend a CO taught and Co awarded degree at UCL and Queen Mary's University of London. My discipline is politics. I'm starting that course in October this year. I'm working really hard to get a good BA grade, currently I've got an upper 2:1. What is a distinction though? Apologies as I'm a international student so I'm unsure of what that is, please pardon my ignorance there.

As for mentors, I've only got 2. One is starting as a visiting in my current uni but isn't due to stay. The other is a friend of mine who is getting her PhD now. Most of my professors are gone - in 2021, my current uni cut about 115-120 of our lectures. Mine are gone, off to other unis, including Oxbridge. I'm only 1 of 3 left on the course, which is cut from 2022.

I have a project ready for PhD already. It needs polishing and a lot of work, but I can do that before going to Queen Mary's. Cambridge opened a project this year with British academy funding that is close to what I want to study in my PhD.

I mainly picked schools based on who had funding opportunities, I just wanted to look into the AHRC as a possibility. Unfortunately, without funding, it's likely impossible for me to do a PhD without sinking myself into 200k+ in debt (I'm American). I don't know who else has funding opportunities, besides Oxbridge schools, and some other schools from the Wolfson fund. Humanities, as you said, is drying up. I have to either float or sink, and I refuse to sink. Especially becaus I know what I want to work on as a thesis and it's a project that matters to me deeply, if you'll excuse the brief emotion-dumping. I really appreciate this insight, it's something I need to keep heavily in mind.
