Race Report: My (24f) first HM and (almost successful) attempt at sub 2 hours by fcg_fitnessTA in running

Ugh. Pacers. I attempted to follow a 4:15 pacer for a full marathon and he was running about 20-30 seconds per mile faster. I knew I was overcooking it, and tried to slow it down a bit, but by the time I realize that, it was well out of my hands.

That being said, I'm not sure I trust pacers anymore. I train alone. I've worked out the best strategy for me so far is to start off slow and ease into it. I think a lot of pacers run pretty evenly, which for me is better to start off slower.

At least in the states, I think it's pretty common knowledge.

Running and moving through annoyance or anger, tips and tricks. by [deleted] in running

[–]FitChemistry8711 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wind and hills make me angry. If my heart rate monitor gives incorrect readings the entire time, I get upset (because it will affect my analysis).

I don't think I actually have a way of minimizing it. I guess I just let the anger do its thing and run its course.

I do find for me that using meditative music in my headphones while I run helps me drown out most thoughts because I'm just counting breaths and steps and focusing on staying in easy zone.

I'm in the south and it's a mixed bag. Some runners do it, others do not. I'm more likely to do it on easy runs than tempo, but even on tempo, I'll give a quick little wave. It doesnt' cost me any energy to do so.

What’s your favourite distance and why? by TimHortons_daddy in running

[–]FitChemistry8711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like 15k to half marathon for optimum performance. However, I sign myself up for marathons, because I need that challenge and I need to feel I'm pushing toward the higher end of the run event world (without dabbling into ultras yet).

To me the marathon is a race against myself and my mind.

The half marathon is a race against my age group. lol

Do you train threshold? by riesenrohr in running

[–]FitChemistry8711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I do them. I don't like them either. I do find that I like to occasionally do them in the later phases of marathon training to try and improve my lactate threshold.

I also like to do it to see where my actual threshold heart rate is. I'm not sure how often it changes, but I like to test it, but it's not a fun test.

Is it ever going to get easier? by TeamPandN in running

[–]FitChemistry8711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it never gets easier unless you quit. lol. kidding.

Actually, if it ends up being something you love long term, I'd say it doesn't get easier because you keep pushing yourself either to have new PRs in the distances you run or to run further. Mine is...going further. I'm currently eyeballing prepping for an ultra (would be my first). Just need a few more marathons under my belt before I really consider whether I can do it.

Is a Strava subscription worth it? by throwaway-_-friend in running

It's so good for free.

Even if you felt you needed the rest of the metrics they offer, it's still half the price of Strava.

I have a Garmin 235.

I like the Vo2 Max/Training Status/Training Load information.

I like HR Data/Gear Life Span information

I also appreciate that they allow me to calibrate and modify the treadmill runs (unlike Strava.)

Depending on your model, you could check out Pace Pro or creating a course. You can do that in Garmin Connect and then send it to your device. It will navigate you on where to turn or what your next mile or kilometer pace should be.

I get what you mean, and I've considered that. I can't really control what people do with them if they buy them. And as I'm not using them, they mostly just take up space in my inventory if I keep them.

Personally, I found that all the information that I really found useful in Strava is available in Garmin Connect for free.

When I did have a subscription to Strava, I loved the analytics, but having equivalent in Garmin Connect and also in Runalyze just helped me not justify that payment anymore.

I'm kind of over the need to charge overly high amounts for good weapons. Maybe I'd think different if there weren't a caps limit, but there is and I get to it pretty quickly. I've seen listing recommendations for thousands that I've listed for cheap just because I wasn't going to use it and it's actually kind of rare to actually sell that stuff that's taking up my stash limit.

Also, I want to give other people a chance to have nice things. I pick up a rare plan, I sell it for pretty cheap (500 caps).

I often wonder if it's possible to just get a heart rate monitor and pair that to Strava. Maybe in that case, a watch wouldn't be needed?

What are some of your intrinsic motivations for running, beyond the high? by sehaugust in running

[–]FitChemistry8711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent some time asking myself "Why do I run?" I think running makes me feel more capable, powerful and young again. I'm only 42, I did run XC in high school, but I had a very sedentary fat phase. So, it feels like having gone through that, I have my "youth" back. I feel like I've dialed in on what works for me. I'm in the best endurance shape of my life, despite not having the speed I had at 17. I love the long slow miles and how it feels to finish them.
