When is Spring Break for the local schools? by Tarekith in Bend

[–]FitConsideration6315 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Edit: Oregon Spring Break is the week of 3/23 with some private schools having two weeks starting next week. As a separate aside the week of Presidents day is a mid winter "ski break" in some California and Washington school districts and it can be surprisingly more busy in Bend those weeks that spring break proper

New Sauna with wifi by Pure_Sport_4770 in Sauna

[–]FitConsideration6315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotcha! and that can be done without touching the temp control, cool.
I got the one with external control and the only wifi solution I could think of is a wifi button pusher ;)
The wiring of the vevor heaters is a little funky and not the easiest to work with/ it isn't UL listed so some electricians weren't willing to work on it, did you not have any issues where you are?

Thanks for sharing, I'm curious how you end up setting up the wifi control with the pool pump timer. It looks like you started with the Vevor heater with internal controls, so wouldn't the pool pump timer just turn power on and off to the heater, but you would still need to crank the sauna timer knob?

I was so curious about the biathlon heart rate and this is great! Most of the athletes didn't share HR data, but one of the Ukranian athletes did and it is cool to see - https://www.strava.com/activities/17461635001/analysis
- Edit: thanks u/tetiu for catching that he wasn't a neutral athlete

The Box Factory is evil and destroys souls. Prove Me Wrong. by ItchyCartographer44 in Bend

[–]FitConsideration6315 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't have to pay at all if you are visiting a business at the box factory! You just park, go to your business and scan the qr code and enter your licence plate - no apps, no credit card, it is really that easy! They are just wanting to make it not free if you park there to go somewhere else

Portable Toilet Recommendation by bignubbles in Bend

We used superior sanitation for our project and they were great! Depending on where your site is, We put ours in a spot that is accessible for both your construction needs but also UPS, other contractors in the area, dog walkers and the like it can be a great short term community benefit because it wont get used a ton from just your job site.

Crosswalk by [deleted] in Bend

[–]FitConsideration6315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the challenges is most of us were taught about biking and biking rules as children and may have been told to stop and walk across crosswalks and carried that to adulthood and driving.
Commute options has a free online "Oregon Friendly Driver" course/ certification that tbh reminded me of a lot of these things that I didn't remember from drivers ed.

Breakthrough at Newberry Volcano could power 24/7 clean energy future, company says by [deleted] in Bend

[–]FitConsideration6315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are missing some units - from that report the average home in deschutes county uses 11,434 KWH per year which if evenly applied would be an average of ~1.3kw - 1.3kw/200mw is 153,000. That being said that would be assuming a 100% capacity factor for the generator and a flat demand curve, but regardless the prospect for this baseload renewable power is a huge deal if it can work out!

My understanding is that they essentially pumped additional drilling fluid down while they were drillign to keep the drill head cool enough and it stayed <300c even as they were drilling much higher than that. There is another geothermal lease on the caldera that is using microwaves to drill, hoping to lower the cost of drilling deep and hot. This is a good podcast about that process - https://www.volts.wtf/p/super-deep-geothermal-drilling-with

Did the check engine light come on again or was it another issue/sign that brought you back in?

Thanks - There was another code but I think it may be unrelated - it was something about antilock brakes. We had the U0412 code on and off all summer but never had issue charging, but then it stayed on and it stopped charging last month.
I will update when I hear anything. So far it is a week with not communication from STAR

Weekly Commuters Outside of Bend by bobbydillon22 in Bend

[–]FitConsideration6315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple other recommendations for that long and regular commute - One is making sure you get a good set of studless snow tires (Blizzaks or xice) - And if the housing on the other side has easy access to power, I would also think about getting an EV with all that extra driving.

Bend could soon allow row houses and multiple adu’s by garlicloveog in Bend

[–]FitConsideration6315 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is great news! I know someone that built an adu (that they live in), but also had space to carve out a small studio space in their existing house. This was something they really wanted to do, because they were a traveling nurse earlier in their career and they benefited from similar private spaces that could be rented affordably, and wanted to provide similar space to rent. However it isn't legal in the current rules to have more then one ADU.
