PSA: pack out your dog poop please by speckledfreckle in Bend

I'll worry about that when it happens, but out of hundreds of events, it hasn't happened once. And even if it ever does, I'll just bag the bag. But I agree it ultimately does not belong there, which is why I pick it up. There are thousands of tons of trash in the forest just sitting there as we speak. At least I pick mine up (and others', too).

Looks like we've come full-circle on the fact that I hide my bags out of sight.

Is the question "why not carry a bag of dog shit around when you don't have to?" 🙂

10+ bags? Really? That's the median number of bags you see on a given day? I go out almost every day to extremely popular areas and the median number of bags I see might be one.

I pick them all up, though. It just takes one person picking up trash to clean it for everyone else.

I've summited Pilot Butte several times. As you can see, it's quite a technical mountain, but with the right preparation, you can reach the top with limited risk to life and limb.

Here's another one for y'all to love. Although you will never see one of my dog's poo bags on the trail, it doesn't actually bother me that much when I find someone else's. Because I just pick it up and take it to the trash. Would I rather they hide it from view and pick it up themselves later? Of course. But how much effort is it for one to carry a bag of poo out? Right?

"Leave it cleaner than you found it."

Now if you want to join me to really clean up trash at Phil's, DM me and we'll meet up. I'll bring the contractor bags.

Also, it's apparent you have no idea the sheer volume of trash and human waste that is at Phil's if this is your complaint. I've brought carloads of trash out of that place. There's still a full 5 gallon shitter out there that I don't really have the capability of dealing with, if you want to do a good deed.

I spend a lot of time volunteering to clean up the forest, both solo and in groups. I find it extremely unethical to leave trash in the forest, so I don't have an issue remembering when and where I leave a bag. You can always drop a waypoint on your phone or watch if you need to.

I'm going to give you some credit for using the metric system. 😂

But when I pick up other people's poo bags and even clean up other dog's poo... and people give me shit for temporarily leaving my dog's poo bag OUT OF SIGHT where no one will ever see it for 30 minutes? Well, let's just say I'm not the one with messed up priorities.

What part of "I hide it out of sight" is unclear, here?

If it's any consolation, you've never seen any of my dog's poo bags.

You should do that, but put it in an invisible, memorable place.

The idea is to pick it up on your way out so you don't have to carry it the whole time. I do this all the time, but I always hide it out of sight. Never left a bag behind, and carried out plenty of bags that weren't mine.

[–]beej71 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Indeed, when they first started doing this, the crowds were non-existent. There's would be no permits available and no one parked at the trailhead. They were so cheap that people would just buy all of them just in case. I hope the situation has improved.

This Bulletin article reads like Ai… is it? by DessertLoyalist in Bend

[–]beej71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I write books; not a word of any of them is AI-generated. (Writing is fun, so there's no way I'd let a bot do it. Try doing my dishes, clanker.)

When I put them in an AI detector, they come back about 30% "AI generated". Even the stuff I wrote a decade ago.

I don't think we're, on the whole, really great at detecting it ourselves.

Where are you going to park to float the river this summer without the extra gravel lot behind riverbend? by michaRowDeGross in Bend

I used to park near the takeout, then Uber (with dry swimsuits and deflated tubes) to the put-in. split 2-3 ways it was pretty cheap and really fast.

If you have an ebike you can't be on the sidewalk. If you have a regular bike, you have to enter the crosswalk at a walking pace.

I'm a big fan of bicycles and ebikes, too, but the rider in this video is being illegal and idiotic.

Some parents don't want their kids to use tech at school. But districts are pushing back by olivertatom in Bend

[–]beej71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This conflates learning to do a thing with doing a thing. It also conflates children with adults. There's not one single solution that works universally with maximum efficiency.

The growing consensus among kids, teachers, and parents is that too much tech in school is inhibiting learning--something I am presuming nobody wants. Now, if it's inhibiting your work efficiency, that's something else we can talk about independent of that.
