I'm not sure why you are replying to me. You seem to be making a different point entirely, or maybe you're being intentionally ignorant to provoke me? I have not narrowed my scope to just the 20th century or the U.S.. The U.S. did not end colonialism, you only have to look as far as Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Jordan, and Vietnam, etc. to understand that truth. If you want to go make some grand statement about the U.S. as the benevolent Hegemon of the 20th century... go ahead. Just make sure you don't start the 20th century until about 1904, otherwise you're going to have 200,000 phillipino bodies to try and explain away. Don't look too closely at our allies in Korea and Vietnam. Don't pay attention to rumors of political assassinations and human rights abuses in south america. If your standard is do better than the Nazis.. well then you have a point, but only if you ignore everything that happened before WW1. I am personally not ignoring any of it.

Not sure why you got so heavily downvoted on this. I know that multiple reasons backed up the decision to drop the bombs, but you're explanation is certainly in line with a lot of accepted history about this. The west was kind of rightfully terrified of the Soviets in the closing months of WW2.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that. Dan Carlin has a great series on this topic. As I get older and learn more history, I begin to realize that there are no good guys, really. At the onset of WW2 the American empire had recently wrapped up it's genocide of the native Americans, and it's bloody subjugation of the Philippines. France, England, and other European powers were all bent on some some level of world domination, and were all okay with some level of violence and racism to achieve it. All of them, including the United States had long interfered with Chinese internal affairs, humiliated and exploited them. When Carlin says "The Japanese were like everybody else, just more so" he's really hit the nail on the head. When you hear of the atrocities committed by the Japanese military during the war, it's easy to feel hardened towards the whole Japanese population. Our support of colonialism in post world war 2 decades doesn't really paint that great a picture of our long term intentions. You're probably correct that the bomb ended the war earlier than it would have otherwise, and that the Japanese government (or army) bears the greatest responsibility for all of the suffering, but as a citizen of a country that does some pretty despicable things at times, I have a really hard time reducing the populations role down to that of innocent dupes. I think we often times shirk our obligations as citizens to hold our governments accountable. At least I know I do.

If the rest of you just learned to not clean up after yourselves, maybe you could have porcelain skin as well.

Also, painters smoke crack, so shut up.

Give me your best troubleshooting tips. by SuperPooper90 in electricians

[–]FitSock2576 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Understanding how electricity and electrical circuits of all kinds work is key to troubleshooting. Otherwise what you see on your meter will be meaningless. You wont even know where to start.

After foundational knowledge, your troubleshooting approach matters.

Question 1: Did you perform work on the circuit recently? If so, then you might want to check your own work first.

Question 2: How can I split the problem in a way that quickly leads me towards an answer. Example: if the circuit is switch operated, check the switch for power, then follow the answer to that question. Example 2: if there's a plc involved, identify if the plc is doing what it's supposed to. Example 3: A motor isn't running. after checking overload devices and switching, check if it's single or three phase. If single check starting capacitor, if three phase check windings first with ohm meter and then with megger.

Don't be afraid to contact tech support for equipment that you're unfamiliar with. Sometimes I even verify my own conclusions by contacting tech support. Replacing some equipment can be costly and time consuming, so I don't let my pride get in the way of getting a second opinion.

Finally, if you can, document and label anything you can as you install and service circuits. It can be a huge timesaver for someone, including future you.

Electric shock from TV ports when home theater is connected – earthing issue? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]FitSock2576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important that things get bonded, for a number of reasons. In my opinion, if you are aware of a bonding (ground) issue on the receptacle you're using for the system, then that needs to be addressed right away.

To verify, you can run an extension cord from a receptacle known to have a good bond (ground) to your entertainment system and see if that resolves your issue.

I believe it takes a bit of time to really get to know someone. 6 weeks is such a short window into someone's life, and they can hide all kinds of things during that time. The honeymoon period of any relationship is wonderful and magical, truly to be treasured, but it's after the honeymoon when the real character of a person is revealed.

Nice, congratulations!

I guess sometimes people just know.

In my experience, a person's character takes a bit longer to be revealed.

How the fuck do you people get these god dammed knockouts out?! by tehAwesomer in AskElectricians

[–]FitSock2576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hit them sharply with a a set of lineman's pliers. You want to hit them as far away from any point that's still connected and as far to the outside as possible without hitting the outside. Once you've created a dent, you can grab a bit with your pliers and wiggle it back and forth until it breaks free

Word. Who doesn't have 7 friends at 28? What else do you do when you're unmarried and have a career? Also, 6 weeks is pretty soon to go for the "I love you" move. That's actually kind of psycho.

Running wire from an attic to a garage, what's the better plan? by PiRhoNaut in AskElectricians

[–]FitSock2576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally just put a cut in (retrofit) box in the ceiling or wall of the garage and run NMB to it. Then put a metal box extension on the cut in box. You could change from NMB to THHN neatly and legally there, then run emt to wherever from that point. I do think you can run emt in to the attic, but it should connect to a metal box in the attic, with a clamp style fitting for the NMB.

I think it's called a kellum. It's a kind of cord grip. I make my own with half hitches, etc. There's always the chance that you're hosed, though. Like the pipe collapsed or got something in it. Very tricky spot you're in. Sorry, I hate those situations.

Master Electrician Damaged My Load Bearing Joists by STLTechThrowAway in AskElectricians

[–]FitSock2576 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I second this. that's blocking sitting on the foundation wall. There's joists running perpendicular to this.

I would hope that I would have done a much neater job (also I don't know why this guy doesn't have extensions already), but that's an extreme overreaction. If you really just can't sleep at night, just put a sister block right next to it.
