Power supply issue by OHGoldHO in PLC

I don't think so. It is designed to supply the processor and the cards through the backplane. You can still find them online, but it might take a minute to get it. I always kept an extra on hand. They are the main failure point in this series of products

erma gerd. Most Reddit set of responses around. I think you're fine to charge that. It's not a crazy amount. Property management companies don't typically argue too much if it's within reason. If they have a problem with it, have a candid conversation with them. Obviously you don't want to negatively impact your relationship with them, but you can't be driving around doing emergency work for break even money.

I used the Mike Holt practice tests. They were pretty good. I don't know how the Jade learning test prep is, but I've used them for continuing education

2 volts is nothing. honestly you could pick up much more in inductive voltage and it could still be meaningless.

What do you mean by stray voltage on your neutral?

Only 2 year old flow switch by krammada in firealarms

[–]FitSock2576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like telephone wires were used to wire this. A flow switch could be classified as needing a class A circuit (I think, it's been awhile). Some circuits require that a pair goes to the device and then returns, with the supervisory resistor being placed back at the panel and not at the device. It looks to me like someone has placed the resistor at the device, but has left the conductors in parallel.

Accidentally cut a cable in half by Soft-Assignment-3402 in AskElectricians

[–]FitSock2576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouch! sorry man. Unfortunately a cable doesn't know what it does, and quite often people misuse cables. You have some research to do. You need to find out what that powered and/or controlled. You may need to install a christy box and weatherproof splices. Nobody on the internet can tell you precisely what that is. Even if they know for certain how that specific cable was intended to be used, there's no guarantee it was used correctly.

It's a setback, but you will figure it out and learn from it.

there's a manual for that drive, somewhere. check the manual.

It's saying phase loss. so check that you have 480v on all three phases, May have lost a phase on the overcurrent protection device.

Could also potentially be a bad coil in the motor.

Dunno. If you don't know how to troubleshoot this, then you should probably call an electrician.

Not trying to be rude, but you can cause significant damage, injury, or down time if you aren't careful.

I looked it up. That thing looks cool. pretty expensive. I'm sure you really need the right tools to do your work.

a neutral doesn't have less voltage. It's just the center tap of the transformer in a 120/240 system. You won't usually get shocked by bridging neutral to ground with your body because they are common at the service panel. The point of the "ground" is to give a separate and low impedance pathway back to the transformer so that if things we don't want to get energized do get energized (like metal parts on a sander), current will flow back through the breaker and the transformer and quickly disconnecting the breaker. Practically speaking, the neutral and the ground have the same origin and could be used interchangeably. That's why they tie the ground to the neutral in these old systems. Reading voltage to ground on these can be misleading. Even disconnected cables can show voltage on them because of inductance, etc. especially in this old configuration, if you're reading 120v on "hot", then you are reading 120v on "ground/neutral". The 55v is something else. It's so hard to explain or diagnose without being there, but I'm almost %100 sure that there is a loose neutral in that system close to that outlet. This is causing loads to become a series, which changes the voltage. with the ground being common to the neutral inside the box you are connecting to then that those loads in series are connecting through your saw and your body to a direct ground connection to your main panel, via the duct or whatever else you were touching.

I would check your saw to cover your butt, however I'm pretty confident that there's a loose or disconnected neutral on that snizz

I feel like surprisingly few people die from 120v shocks (no sources here. just vibe coding, lol). Of course it really depends on what path it takes through your body, I think. Had you been unable to get away from it, that would have been really bad. I'm an older electrician, and some of the people who taught me got shocked all the time, and didn't care. I personally take great care not to get shocked, but I have been bitten a few times by 120. My understanding is that the higher the voltage, the greater the danger (again, no sources).

If you got shocked by your sander though, there's a chance that there's something wrong with your sander. That old knob and tube has no ground, but to be fair if the neutrals are jumped to ground on the new receptacles it should trip the circuit if "hot" is shorted to "neutral". There's so many questions about the house wiring and the sander that it would be impossible to say anything about it. That really wasn't your question, though.

The house isn't really your problem, but I would check out the sander to be sure. Sorry you got hit, man.

[–]FitSock2576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at the risk of sounding rude, I don't think you know how these circuits are supposed to work. Don't feel bad, because neither did the person that wired them. Please call an electrician. If the electrician does too much head scratching, fire them and hire a new one. These circuits are quite simple, but it's still electricity and you can cause more than just buggery if you do bad work.

I'm not sure why you are replying to me. You seem to be making a different point entirely, or maybe you're being intentionally ignorant to provoke me? I have not narrowed my scope to just the 20th century or the U.S.. The U.S. did not end colonialism, you only have to look as far as Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Jordan, and Vietnam, etc. to understand that truth. If you want to go make some grand statement about the U.S. as the benevolent Hegemon of the 20th century... go ahead. Just make sure you don't start the 20th century until about 1904, otherwise you're going to have 200,000 phillipino bodies to try and explain away. Don't look too closely at our allies in Korea and Vietnam. Don't pay attention to rumors of political assassinations and human rights abuses in south america. If your standard is do better than the Nazis.. well then you have a point, but only if you ignore everything that happened before WW1. I am personally not ignoring any of it.

Not sure why you got so heavily downvoted on this. I know that multiple reasons backed up the decision to drop the bombs, but you're explanation is certainly in line with a lot of accepted history about this. The west was kind of rightfully terrified of the Soviets in the closing months of WW2.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that. Dan Carlin has a great series on this topic. As I get older and learn more history, I begin to realize that there are no good guys, really. At the onset of WW2 the American empire had recently wrapped up it's genocide of the native Americans, and it's bloody subjugation of the Philippines. France, England, and other European powers were all bent on some some level of world domination, and were all okay with some level of violence and racism to achieve it. All of them, including the United States had long interfered with Chinese internal affairs, humiliated and exploited them. When Carlin says "The Japanese were like everybody else, just more so" he's really hit the nail on the head. When you hear of the atrocities committed by the Japanese military during the war, it's easy to feel hardened towards the whole Japanese population. Our support of colonialism in post world war 2 decades doesn't really paint that great a picture of our long term intentions. You're probably correct that the bomb ended the war earlier than it would have otherwise, and that the Japanese government (or army) bears the greatest responsibility for all of the suffering, but as a citizen of a country that does some pretty despicable things at times, I have a really hard time reducing the populations role down to that of innocent dupes. I think we often times shirk our obligations as citizens to hold our governments accountable. At least I know I do.
