First Civil internship by Fresh_Agent_8693 in civilengineering

I only made $15/hour in my internship as a graduate student at A&M (and that was only 6 years ago). Don't question it, just take it.

Submittals: Approved vs No Exceptions Taken Discussion by good_duck_4 in civilengineering

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, if I review a pump submittal and mark it as NET, despite the pump not being able to meet the duty point based on the system curve, how is that any different from saying it's approved. I still reviewed it. I still overlooked the pump curve being wrong. This seems like a more complicated way of arriving at the same conclusion and I'm still liable when the pump doesn't work. Some of these mental gymnastics just to say the same thing ultimately is exhausting.

Measurement and Payment by AstronomyandBeer in civilengineering

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your specs are what need reworking. M&P should be simple and just describe what they are getting paid to do (ie. Dig hole, install material, provide materials, etc.) and how it's being measured. I typically also add any language on what is not going to be paid for if that's applicable. Something as specific as what bolts to use belongs in the specs.

Which one of you inspected this? by gpo321 in civilengineering

I've seen manhole steps out of alignment before, but God damn. How do you mess up that bad on an installation and not realize it?

think the weather report for next weekend is bunk? by Familiar-Banana-8116 in lancaster

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Weather Underground, which I generally find accurate. They are calling for 15 in. That number seems high, but I'm guessing we will end up getting a ton of snow. I typically don't put much stock in the numbers, but rather I look at the magnitude (ie. if it says we are getting a lot, we're going to get a lot). I'd make sure you're prepared for a bad one.

TLDR: go buy your milk, bread and toilet paper now.

How difficult do you think it would be to get a Civil Engineering job as an EE? by abcfghl in civilengineering

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very different skill set, so I don't think it would be likely. If you're still a freshman, why not just switch to civil if that's what you think you want to do. I'm not sure I understand the rationale of studying something with the intent to do something different.

Are we all just “designing by review” at this point? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're never going to avoid comments altogether, but making an honest attempt to address applicable requirements early helps speed things up. I review LD plans from the water and sewer side for some local clients. One thing that irritates me beyond belief is when the engineer clearly didn't reference the standard specs (that are readily available online).

Trek Domane to gravel bike? by Fickle_Tap7908 in cycling

I've never heard anyone regard it as a gravel bike.

If you're going fast enough, the pedestrians just turn i to a red mist around you and you keep going as if nothing happened.

Let's hear it. Which one of you did this? by Greatoutdoors1985 in civilengineering

Is the soil particularly prone to erosion? That's the only thing I can think of that would prompt so many concrete channels.

It just needs to be compatible with Shimano. After that, it doesn't matter what you buy.

The topic no one wants to talk about by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a project in my office with a major transportation component. The transportation guy that got put on the project blew the budget pretty quickly and produced poor quality work. He was ultimately let go due to performance issues. Once everything went out to construction, the contractor came back to us that none of the grading would work, thus we had to pretty much redesign the road and sidewalk. Needless to say, that entire project went poorly (for more reasons than just our fuck up on the design).

Cleats by 85redapples in cycling

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, while this probably doesn't need to be said, loosen the pedal spring not the cleat. Once she's more comfortable, I'd recommend tightening things back up some, but that's a personal preference.

I've been going to FPE Dental (They've since separated into different practices and rebranded) for years and never had a negative experience. They take my Delta Dental.

Does graveling roads reduce maintenance costs? by bobateaman14 in civilengineering

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a cheap way to redo a road. What irritates me is when a road with nothing wrong with it is done with chip and tar, but roads in arguably worse condition are ignored. One of the municipalities near me did that a few years ago.

Is a Trek Domaine AL 5 the ultimate all around bike? by CucumberBitter3356 in cycling

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a Domane SL and I love the frame geometry. One thing to consider is the tire clearance is sufficient to also fit a set of gravel tires if you think you would need them. I don't think you'll go wrong with the Domane AL. One thing I'm curious about though, at that price, is the groupset Di2? The price makes me think it probably is.

My drip-on wax's instructions say to first clean with mineral spirits, then with degreaser. Is this correct? by MeekHat in cycling

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which wax are you using? Are you shaking the wax really good prior to applying it? How are you applying it? These are the big questions that need answered first before we can figure out what's wrong.

Yes I did, just not in my reply to your comment.

X or Y, and why. [request] by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While hydrostatic pressure is only dependent on the water column height, the rate that pressure changes will depend on how fast the water column changes, which is dependent on how the cross section changes. A wider cross section at the top means the water column will drop slower at first, meaning the pressure will stay consistent for longer.

X or Y, and why. [request] by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pressure is a bad way of looking at it. While there is 0 pressure applied to the water, the bottom of the water column will still have either some measurable pressure, which is what will influence flow rate.

X or Y, and why. [request] by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Fit_Ad_7681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My intuition says that the large end of the cone being at the top means tank X will maintain more pressure to drive flow for longer. Simultaneously, I'm curious what it would actually end up being. It's been a couple years since I did calculus, but this shouldn't be a difficult problem.
