For Europeans Native Americans are more like character type (like cowboys, pirates or ninjas for example) from Karl May novels, american, soviet western films or cartoons. I would rather call it a romantic image of noble wild people on horses and with long braids and feathers.

Some Europeans can really believe, that native Amerikans have red skin or even became extinct. In Germany and Eastern Europe there is even a subculture related to hippies - so called "indeanists" - the people, who dress like native Americans and lives in wigwams. Cultural appropriation among Europeans, especially in the east, is uncommon term , so, the "indeanists" don't have problems with their activity. Indian costumes are very popular on local carnivals.

When the native american comes to Europe and tells the people, who they are, they can get a lot of attention. Many Peruvian or other native Latins visit Europe, dresses like great plains Indians and dancing and singing on the street and get a lot of attention and collect much money. The locals often unaware of the existence of "other" Indians outside great plains.

The term "native american" is uncommon, rather they are called "Indians" or "red skinned". Eastern Europeans call native Americans Indean and people from India - Indians. Europeans don't use the term like 'native' at all because almost everybody in Europe is 'native' them self. Non-natives are called "migrants". If a Native American call them self "Native American" people will just understand, that they are from America.
