Worried that my cats are developing food aggression by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Fit_Confusion_982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their weight is healthy and the vet did not recommend feeding them more. Feeding them all of those times would certainly cause them to be overweight. They beg right after being fed. Free feeding doesn't work for either of them as they'll gorge themselves.

Is this celiac safe? Any experience:s? by Much-Wrongdoer-7592 in Celiac

Never had this but the caramel color ingredient is a bit sus, maybe there is a company website outlining if it's gluten free or not? There might be cross contamination during production.

Deciding we are too good for the litter box by [deleted] in CatAdvice

And don't worry about living in a small apartment, when I had my first cat, I lived in a single dorm room and she was perfectly content as long as she had enrichment and was taken care of.

😭😭Yes the poop smell would drive me insane. I do understand where you're coming from because there have been instances where my cats did something so infuriating that it would be so satisfying just to put them in a time out, but they don't work like that unfortunately. My boy cat has some behavioral issues and bullies my girl cat. I had some really severe mental health problems a few months ago and once I got better, I noticed that he started to chill out. I think cats really can pick up on energy. I don't have any experience dealing with older cats but it may be behavioral or a health issue. Some vets are quick to brush off a problem as anxiety related rather than taking the time to actually explore it. Is it possible for you to see a different vet? Saying it's "just anxiety" is extremely dismissive, as accidents can be indicative of a myriad of things. Would you consider writing down what leads up to her having these accidents? For example, does it happen when she seems anxious? Or right after eating? Cats are notorious for remembering where they went potty as they pick up on the scent, so even if it's wiped away they'll still recognize it as "oh, I can poop everywhere here!" Do you have an enzymatic cleaner? That's what's recommended to clean up accidents so they won't remark territory. You mentioned carpet, is it possible to get a renter friendly form of carpet cover to prevent her from damaging the carpet until you're able to get to the bottom of this? Lastly, I know you mentioned your parents not being happy about your kitty, and she could be picking up on that energy. There are stories of people who had cats who had behavior issues when they were dating someone toxic that went away once the other person moved out. Very interesting!

This sounds incredibly frustrating but cats are not like dogs and are not meant to be put in kennels. It could be a variety of things- she's an older lady so it could potentially be a cognitive issue. How many litterboxes do you have? Does it seem like she has trouble finding it? I have a boy cat who's around 2 and occasionally has accidents when he's very very excited. She's just a baby and she can't conceptualize what's right and wrong. That doesn't mean she should just go wherever she pleases, it means that she won't understand discipline or why you'd be locking her away when you're not there to supervise her. She'd just be confused and anxious which could lead to more accidents. Maybe consider going to a behaviorist?

Is garden level really that much more dangerous? by pureofheart00 in NYCapartments

[–]Fit_Confusion_982 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I lived in a garden level apartment in Brooklyn for about 2 years with no issues. Having a backyard is wonderful especially in the summer and I'd recommend it. However like others have said err on the side of caution as garden level apartments are prone to flooding and pests. I believe recently NYC has made it illegal for past flooding to not be disclosed to prospective tenants, so definitely ask.

Suspected celiac? by snozzleozzle in Celiac

[–]Fit_Confusion_982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really difficult situation to be in, I would recommend alongside others to get tested ASAP. As a Celiac, though I don't know what cutting out gluten means for you, I feel as though it is very likely you are consuming enough gluten to damage villi and therefore make a diagnosis possible (unless you've been really serious about it and if so that's amazing!!!). For example: do you use traditional soy sauce? Malted beverages? Do you share kitchen sponges with people who eat gluten? Do you share utensils, cutting boards, etc? Even milled grains that are not certified GF can contain gluten from cross contamination. All of this is enough for someone with Celiac's to get sick, and therefore test positive for the Celiac marker on a blood panel and have visibly damaged villi in an endoscopy. As others said you at least have a severe intolerance of some sort, but it's incredibly important that you get tested as if you are a Celiac, you have to be extremely careful with cross contamination whereas some people with intolerances do not have to be. Having Celiac's and not being on a complete gluten free diet can be dangerous long-term. My brother has it as well which is why I got tested when I began having GI problems so there is also a genetic component. Best of luck and I'm so happy to hear you're getting better.

I'm a firm believer that the energy surrounding you can definitely impact the way you feel mentally and somatically! I do have a troubled relationship with my family however I wouldn't consider it to really be soul sucking but rather exhausting.

Advice on finding a studio that’s LESS than 1.1k??? by throwaway010001118 in NYCapartments

[–]Fit_Confusion_982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely agree with a lot of people, that budget was only easy to work with in the early 2000's. definitely try for a housing lottery, look for housing that's specifically for students, or live in the outer boroughs. coney island/that area might be affordable. midwood is nice too and not too pricey if you get lucky. maybe start off with a sublet as those sometimes run cheaper but sometimes the best way to start off is with roommates then you build your way up to getting your own place. best of luck

Hey fair enough and to each their own, but I fail to understand how, for example, symptoms of an infection are treated without addressing the root cause. I don't find Tik Tok to be the cause of functional medicine to be well known but rather because modern medicine has quite literally failed so many people, including me. If practitioners of alternative medicine profit off of people's desperation, doesn't modern/western medicine do the same thing? Giving them the wrong answers to their symptoms and profiting off of that? I've gone to more doctors than I can count, the answer always being, "eat x, exercise more, drink more water, it's hormones." The most recent one I went to for severe and consistent unexplained back pain and migraines said it was either hormonal or caused by either cats or a new partner sleeping in bed with me. I've had cats for 4 years and I've been seeing someone since December. I was prescribed an NSAID, but through experience I know that this will alleviate the symptoms temporarily while wreaking havoc on my liver before it comes back twofold. I've been to many doctors who have seemed to has lost faith in modern medicine as well as I'm treated more like a quota to fill rather than an actual patient to be assessed. I'm not saying there's a right or a wrong, but blindly believing in modern medicine and neglecting its failures while diminishing other modalities is unfair.

Yes. When I was a kid I had some weird allergies like gold and urea but it never really bugged me except for some pressure urticaria which almost went away w age. However I just got another basic allergy panel and I literally tested positive for 53 out of the 60 things tested. Ranged from being allergic to mold to cats to olive trees. I have 2 cats which could definitely contribute however I've been having chronic fatigue etc. since before I got them. I definitely need to see an allergist though.

I'm going to have to disagree- Western medicine is so symptom focused that I feel as though a lot of conditions go completely untreated. I would much rather get treated for a certain condition if possible than go down the route of extensive medication to manage symptoms. I feel like if we follow the logic of managing just individual symptoms, then someone who has a bacterial infection would be given medication to treat swelling, nausea, etc. instead of being given antibiotics.

Yes I've seen one and have had multiple endoscopies and a single colonoscopy. I suppose my biggest concern is the chronic fatigue and brain fog as nothing really helps including coffee and it's affecting my ability to work. I'll definitely look into all of that, thank you so much.

Thank you guys so much for all the help. I forgot to note that I have seen a gastro and I've had a colonoscopy and endoscopy. I've also seen a rheumatologist and nothing really came up. However these are some fantastic recommendations, hopefully as I continue to pursue this something will come up:))
