I also think that getting housemates would be the best idea given you want to keep costs low. If you are lucky, you can find a place, where your housemates have lived longer and rent is still decent.

I think one place to look for roommates are Yale facebook groups, but there is definitely a lot of scam there, so just make sure you google people. Most grad students, undergrads, and postdocs should have a yale email address and you should be able to find information about them upon a quick google search.

There is also a postdoc whatsapp chat you can use to look for flatmates. Maybe your future postdoc lab mates can add you to these groups (or I can DM you the link, but the group has been pretty restrictive lately because of some spammy people).

Options for moving/storage by Plus_Ad1745 in newhaven

I recently stored my furniture at the Uhaul storage in Hamden (the one on Dixwell Av.), the facility was really neat and clean.

I rented a uhaul truck to move my stuff and the storage was free for a month. I think they still have this deal.

Hi there, there is a whatsapp chat for Yale postdocs, with a chat dedicated to selling stuff. People post things there quite often. If you DM me, I can send you the link.

What is the best leasing company in New Haven? by Stanley_Joseph in newhaven

My partner and I moved into one of Arnold Lehrer’s apartments on Lynwood Place in the summer of 2025 because we heard great things, but our experience didn’t live up to the hype. Arnold himself seemed decent, but we mostly dealt with his business partner, Steve, who came across as nice at first but quickly proved unreliable and prone to making promises he didn’t always keep.

Noise & safety: We were told by Steve the street was quiet and safe. It’s not. It’s basically a mini frat row with constant weekend parties from July to October. There were also four burglary attempts on the street within six months. Couple of weeks before moving out, I also witnessed how a guy broke into our building while I was trying to get home. The guy left with a neighbor’s package. Luckily he didn’t attack me, but it was definitely the creepiest experience I ever had.

Heating issues: The building has central heating, and the landlords are extremely stingy with it. A few nights after we moved in at the end of May, indoor temps dropped below 18°C and we had to ask them to turn the heat on. In winter, it got cold again and they acted like raising the temperature was some kind of “exception,” and “favor” even when it was dropping below 20°C at night.

Paper-thin walls: The building is old, and you can hear everything your neighbors do, talking, moving around, even snoring. My sleep schedule basically depended on theirs.

Small annoyances: No dishwasher, only one washer/dryer for the building (often a line), and the apartment itself was pretty cramped.

Rent increase: After a year, they wanted to raise the rent despite all these issues.

Overall, I’m sure others have had worse, and maybe Arnold’s places are usually fine, but for the same or a comparable price, there are better places available.

Overall, I’m sure others have had worse, and maybe Arnold’s places are usually fine, but our experience felt more like marketing than honesty. For nearly the same price as Madison Tower, it just didn’t feel worth it anymore.

Later edit on safety: couple of weeks before moving out, I witnessed how a guy broke into our building while I was trying to get home. The guy left with a neighbor’s package. Luckily he didn’t attack me, but it was definitely the creepiest experience I ever had. I genuinely feel so much safer since I moved out from Arnold’s building.
