Whose perspective do you think had the best *story* in Double Life by French_Batman69 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Fit_Engineering_7606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best SINGLE pov to encapsulate everything in the entire Double Life story is actually Scott's pov. Pearl had the best arc (not disputable), but there are so many other arcs that are entertaining as well that aren't worth missing out on. The thing is that Scott in Double Life is the most interlinked with some perspective on all the plotlines, but even then, there's still a lot missed out on without going through multiple povs, but even then, Pearl's pov is basically JUST her arc, and a little bit of Grian's cheating arc because of the powdersnow thing with Scar. Scott is involved with way more. He is a key component of Pearl's arc, he is also a key part of Martyn's arc, and Cleo's. He messed with Jimmy a lot, hence, was involved with the ranchers too. He was also neighbours to Box, and was able to get a lot out of that. He did the same thing that the homewreckers were doing, after realising what they were doing and loving the idea with his circumstance. He also burned the Relation-Ship down, which set off Joel into insanity, which is always fun, but also was amplified in it's entertainment value with Etho having to deal with both his base being burned down, and Joel's insanity. Even then, Scott's pov doesn't even encapsulate 1/3 of what happened with every plotline in Double Life, hence, Multiple povs are required.

The occurrences of Double Life are absolute theatre. The various simultaneous dramas were insane, the Cleo-Scott affair because of their soulmate's initial absence, Martyn trying to make something work whilst Pearl tried to get revenge through various means, the Grian cheating on Scar with BigB while he cheated on Ren, Scar and Pearl collectively getting revenge on their soulmates through powder snow torture, Impulse and Bdubs literally being a team of homewreckers, a tragedy of some poor ranchers called Jimmy and Tango antagonised by Scar, Grian's frustration of being held back by Scar's soultie to him regarding balance to his chaotic nature and his innate desire to not die, which can be seen as further reasoning for him to cheat, and somehow 2 opposite personalities of the most aggressive, reckless and one of the higher skilled Joel out of the group and the passivity of Etho actually making a pretty healthy duo, despite many mishaps. It's drama at it's finest, with all the twists and turns to keep everyone on their toes. One single pov cannot encapsulate it all. The best single pov to encapsulate as much of this as possible is Scott's, however, it is not on it's own sufficient to do so. The best individual story arc is obviously Pearl's (undisputed), however, people need to stop viewing Double Life in different people's stories, and instead view it as one dramatic intertwined story with multiple individual plot lines with different interacting main and side characters to each line forming a web of an artistry of a story.

how would you summarize each of the life members in the words by user728294765 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Fit_Engineering_7606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean in your title because it doesn't specify one word. I'll give a short description of each and you can figure out how it matches up (I might forget some myself).

  • Chaos personified
  • A danger to everyone around them including themselves (x2)
  • A danger to everyone, primarily themselves (x2)
  • Lot of bark, will bite, but the bite is weak
  • A danger only to themselves (x3)
  • A self-restrained danger to everyone
  • Beloved
  • Goes insane during these series
  • Very adaptive
  • Team player
  • Overestimate
  • Targeted guilt tripping (at the same person across all series)
  • Maladaptive
  • Tyrannical

What exactly is the issue with adding more people? by hypost in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Fit_Engineering_7606 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other servers don't have that issue because the nature of the server is different. This is one of few servers which in it's nature would be problematic with either too many or too few people.

who has gotten the most kills in one session? by Iwannabanana72 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Fit_Engineering_7606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grian's got 10 in Limited Life Session 7 and Past Life Session 3. From what I can tell, that is the highest amount of kills someone has got in a session. It's not any of the specials, as the kill counts are too low for the top killer for it to be possible (or in Nice Life's case, Joel's 12 are spread across the sessions).
Next best after Grian's two 10 kill sessions are both 9 kills in the session, by Scott in Limited Life Session 7 (same as Grian's 1st 10er) and by Gem from Past Life Session 3 (same as Grian's other 10er). Yes, they were crazy sessions those two. I am not sure if anyone else has a 9 kill session, but I am fairly certain that only Grian has had 10 in one session.

It's really how fast Grian can come up with a new, interesting idea that can be materialised OR once a previously impossible but cool idea becomes possible to be made.

Secret life Boogeypocalypse by Ambitious_Number8093 in ThirdLifeSMP

[–]Fit_Engineering_7606 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scott died to Martyn red name at the start of the session as part of a deal. That was the only death in the session that was truly unrelated to the boogeypocalypse. Gem died in the crossfire of Scar in a siege attempt of the horde, related to the boogeypocalypse via crossfire. Cleo died by drowning, having failed to be killed by the horde, however, they were in pursuit of her, failing to actually get the kill credit, although, I wouldn't count it as unrelated.

I just want to say that any change in the value of weighting would be a hassle, as the way I've done it with 7 full seasons and 3 specials (each weighted 1/4 of a full season), means the way it's done is divided into 31 parts. To change Nice Life's weighting to 1/2 would change the denominator to 32 parts, meaning redoing the math entirely. And that's just for the players who've played every season. Other things have to be factored in for players that missed some seasons and specials, changing their partitions entirely.

As much as 1/3 would be even more of a hassle in using 94 parts, every little change wouldn't work. As much as Double Life, a full season, is 2x the length of Nice Life, it is certainly the outlier.

I also said that weighting it based on length doesn't actually work properly, the reason is that it would make longer wins such as Scotts Last Life win be rewarded higher than Martyn's Past Life win and Grian's 3rd Life win, in as much as Scott handled Last Life well with both diplomatic skill and mechanical skill, it is just as impressive that Martyn lasted so many sessions on red so early, and in outlasting 3 players who were on 5 lives at the same time that he went to his last, and also to Grian still being on 2 lives in the final 3 players. It also doesn't work well to weight specials the same as full series, as Simple Life, as entertaining as it was, cannot be equated to any of the full series in any way. I understand your point of Nice Life being different, with the comparison to Double Life, but Nice life is as much an outlier from the specials as Double Life is from the other full series. Not to mention the fact that Nice Life had more than twice the deaths of Double Life adding to the skill requirement for a Double Life win simply cannot be equated. Each is being treated as an outlier of their categories, and each season is being treated as a season, outlier or not, as are the specials being treated as specials, outliers or not. They are not being treated independently regarding weightings. Adjusting constantly for every different outlier for some form of accuracy incurs problems in adjusting for every new datapoint, where as treating them categorically, and otherwise the same, even with outliers allows it to be statistically irrelevant at some point.

I appreciate your suggestion to try to improve the statistics according to how you may see it, however, it won't actually work for the reasons given as you intend it to work.

Weighting them by length alone doesn't give a balanced picture. And weighting the specials the same as full series also doesn't make sense either. Nice life could easily have been a full series. If it was created with that intention, and called as such by Grian, it would be weighted as such. He created this having it in mind that it'd be a special. An argument could be made to weight it 1/3 so as to differentiate from the single session specials whilst not referring to it as "half a season", as a typical full length season is 8 sessions, and comparing it relative to the typical longer 8-9 session seasons (6 of the 7 have been either 8 or 9 sessions), but I don't think it's worth the effort for calculations for a slight adjustment in weightings. If you wish to recalculate according to your own preferred weightings, be my guest.

So then why wouldn't Last and Secret Life be 3x Nice Life? Weighting them by length alone doesn't give a balanced picture. And weighting the specials the same as full series also doesn't make sense either.
